The Chinese Consulate in South Africa has expressed deep gratitude to Springs police for their swift and successful rescue of a kidnapped Chinese businessman.

The businessman was abducted in Springs, Ekurhuleni, on 7 December 2024, and kidnappers demanded a R3 million ransom from his family.

However, Springs police, acting on a tip-off, quickly located the kidnappers in Lenasia, south of Joburg.

Within 24 hours, the Audi A3 the suspects were travelling in was intercepted and three suspects arrested. The victim was also found unharmed.

Deputy Consul-General Yujiang Oliver Zhou and Consul Xiaoyu Jeff Guan from the Chinese consulate visited the Springs Police Station on Wednesday, 7 May, to thank the police for their efforts.

As a gesture of appreciation, the consulate funded the renovation of the Vispol and detective garden at the station.

Station Commander Raymond Buthelezi welcomed the contribution, saying it would significantly boost police morale.

“The station looks different, and we really appreciate this,” Buthelezi said.

In return, Zhou received a certificate of appreciation for the consulate’s generous support.

Springs police spokesman Themba Khumalo said the consulate expressed a strong desire to collaborate further with the police on projects that benefit communities in and around the station.
