Bitcoin Soars Above $60,000 Mark as Labor Data Fuels Hopes
May 03, 2024 at 02:30 pm
Bitcoin surged over $61,000 following the release of the U.S. government's Nonfarm Payrolls report, which indicated a slightly higher unemployment rate than anticipated. The price increase aligns with expectations that a less favorable employment outlook could lead to the Fed lowering interest rates, making cryptocurrencies more attractive as risk assets.

Bitcoin Surges Past $61,000 Amidst Encouraging Employment Data
New York, May 6, 2023 - Bitcoin has witnessed a remarkable surge in value, surpassing the $61,000 threshold within an hour of the release of the government's Employment Situation Report.
At the time of writing, Bitcoin is trading around $61,640, reflecting a substantial 5.2% gain for the day, as per data from CoinGecko.
The price surge coincides with the publication of the Nonfarm Payrolls report by the U.S. Department of Labor, which indicated an unemployment rate of 3.9% for April, marginally higher than the projected 3.8%.
This data has reignited hopes for a dovish stance from the Federal Reserve (Fed), which has been aggressively raising interest rates to combat inflation. A slowdown in rate hikes could make risk assets, including stocks and cryptocurrencies, more appealing to investors.
The Fed had slashed interest rates to a range of 0-0.25% in March 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, it embarked on a tightening cycle in March 2022 to curb inflation, culminating in a peak rate of 5.25%-5.50% in July 2023. Bitcoin closed the month at $29,230.11, a 4.1% decline month-over-month and half its current price.
Recent market volatility has been influenced by the launch of Bitcoin and Ethereum exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in Hong Kong on April 30. Following their debut, Bitcoin's price initially dipped below $60,000 before sliding further to below $57,000.
Prominent Bitcoin investor Arthur Hayes believes that the recent price dip may have marked the bottom for Bitcoin. In a blog post, the former BitMEX CEO predicted that prices would "bottom, chop, and begin a slow grind higher."
ETF outflows have plagued Bitcoin, with a weekly outflow of $599 million reported by CoinShares. The U.S. market experienced a significant outflow of $860 million, while BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) faced its first daily loss yesterday. Hong Kong's ETFs, however, have recorded inflows of nearly $300 million in their first week.
Ethereum has also experienced gains, rising 2.8% to around $3,050 after the publication of the Nonfarm Payrolls report. Solana has likewise jumped 4.4% to $142, amidst a surge in popularity for meme coins on its blockchain.
