Petrol prices have dropped to a near four-year low at 134.06p a litre, giving drivers a boost ahead of the bank holiday getaway.

The average price of a litre of diesel at UK forecourts on Thursday was 138.84p, the RAC said.

Prices at the pump have fallen sharply in recent months, as global oil prices have decreased.

However, the RAC said it was “disappointing” that the price drop at forecourts has not been steeper yet, given cuts to oil prices.

It believes wholesale costs being paid by retailers indicate that the average price of both petrol and diesel should be about 4p per litre lower.

“Drivers will be hugely relieved to know that petrol is at its cheapest point in nearly four years,” said Simon Williams, RAC head of policy.

The RAC is estimating that more than 17 million leisure trips by car will be made across the UK between Friday and bank holiday Monday.
