The Bank of Papua New Guinea (BPNG) is releasing a new K50 note and 50 toea coin to celebrate the country’s 50th independence anniversary.

BPNG governor Elizabeth Genia said yesterday that 20 million of both would be circulated by August 28.

Genia said the launch highlighted the cultural and historical significance of the Kina and Toea.

She added that the importance of PNG’s currency in the nation’s journey to independence was well-known, but true independence required more than political change.

“The K50 banknote features our unique flora and fauna, the Blue Orchid and Queen Alexandra’s butterfly, the largest in the world.

“The note incorporates our spectacular national bird, the Raggiana Bird of Paradise, which represents the spirit of Papua New Guineans as the nation takes flight to determine its own future.

Note Printing Australia chief executive officer Malcolm McDowell unveiled the two designs in a ceremonial handover to Prime Minister James Marape.

“The commemorative note will be manufactured by Note Printing Australia and the coin by the Royal Australia Mint,” Genia said.
