The Bank of Papua New Guinea (BPNG) is releasing a new K50 note and 50 toea coin to celebrate the country’s 50th independence anniversary.

BPNG governor Elizabeth Genia said yesterday that 20 million of both would be circulated by August 28.

“The K50 banknote features our unique flora and fauna, the Blue Orchid and Queen Alexandra’s butterfly, the largest in the world.

“The note incorporates our spectacular national bird, the Raggiana Bird of Paradise, which represents the spirit of Papua New Guineans as the nation takes flight to determine its own future.

Note Printing Australia chief executive officer Malcolm McDowell unveiled the two designs in a ceremonial handover to Prime Minister James Marape.
