Mt Gox Trustee Postpones Repayment Deadline by One Year

Nobuaki Kobayashi, the trustee in charge of overseeing Mt Gox’s remaining assets, has pushed back the deadline for creditor repayments by a year

Mt Gox Trustee Postpones Repayment Deadline by One Year

The trustee overseeing the remaining assets of bankrupt cryptocurrency exchange Mt. Gox has postponed the deadline for creditor repayments by one year, pushing it back to Oct. 31, 2025.

The announcement was made by Nobuaki Kobayashi on Thursday. He cited delays in distributing the recovered funds after the 2014 collapse of Mt. Gox, which was once the largest cryptocurrency exchange in the world.

Kobayashi said his goal is still to make sure that all creditors get what they are owed. Around 44,900 BTC, currently valued at about $2.8 billion, is still in Mt. Gox-related wallets.

The creditor repayment process began in July 2024, and a large portion of the $9 billion in recovered assets has already been distributed. However, many creditors are still waiting to be paid.

The delays are mainly due to incomplete procedures or problems that came up during the repayment process.

Kobayashi said that even though the deadline has been extended, efforts to speed up the process are still being made. Mt. Gox creditors with claims that haven't been settled are being asked to log in to the Mt. Gox online claim system to clear up any obstacles that might be stopping their repayments.

This extension shows that while a lot of progress has been made, the trustee is still having trouble dealing with the remaining claims.

The collapse of Mt. Gox had a big impact on the cryptocurrency industry, and this development serves as a reminder of that. Creditors have been waiting a long time for these repayments, and this latest news will likely come as a disappointment to some.
