In a remarkable display of innovation and collaboration, a team of Mexican students and researchers, in partnership with industry alumni, have developed a new type of ventilator designed to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. This groundbreaking device, a Mexican-made "Ambu bag" type ventilator, promises to be significantly more affordable than its international counterparts, potentially slashing costs by up to five times compared to units imported from the United States, which can range from $16,000 to $24,000.

A Local Solution for a Global Crisis

The project, spearheaded by students and researchers from the Universidad de Guadalajara (UdeG), aims to provide a crucial piece of medical equipment at a fraction of the cost. Margarita Hernández Ortiz, the General Coordinator of Research, Postgraduate Studies, and Linkage (CGIPV), highlighted the importance of innovation and inter-sectoral collaboration during these challenging times. The "Ambu bag" ventilator operates by automatically and controllably supplying an air-oxygen mixture directly to a patient's airway via a reanimation bag.

Boosting Production and Accessibility

If regulatory authorization is secured, the team estimates they can produce between 35 to 50 ventilators daily, scaling up to as many as 1,000 units per month. This rapid production capacity is bolstered by the availability of local suppliers in Guadalajara, ensuring a swift procurement of necessary components. This initiative stands in contrast to recent large-scale imports, such as a shipment of 211 ventilators from the U.S. that recently arrived in Toluca, Mexico, underscoring the potential of domestic manufacturing to address critical healthcare needs.
