Malaysia to Implement Sweeping Cryptocurrency Regulations in Early 2019
Apr 13, 2024 at 06:06 pm
Malaysia intends to implement regulations for cryptocurrency and Initial Coin Offerings (ICO) during the first quarter of 2019. The Securities Commission (SC) will facilitate the regulations as part of their efforts to provide alternative fundraising avenues and new investment asset classes.

Malaysia to Enact Comprehensive Cryptocurrency Regulations in Q1 2019
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (November 28, 2018) - Malaysia is poised to take a significant step towards regulating its cryptocurrency industry with the enactment of comprehensive regulations in the first quarter of 2019. This move marks a pivotal moment in the country's efforts to embrace the transformative power of blockchain technology while safeguarding investors and maintaining financial stability.
The regulations, set to be introduced by the Securities Commission (SC), the country's financial regulatory body, will cover a wide range of aspects related to cryptocurrencies and Initial Coin Offerings (ICOs). The move is part of the SC's ongoing efforts to facilitate alternative fundraising avenues and foster innovation in the financial sector.
Malaysia has been gradually approaching the regulation of its cryptocurrency industry, with the process commencing in late 2017. The authorities have taken steps to control the sector, emphasizing the need for entities wishing to issue cryptocurrencies to consult with the central bank, Bank Negara Malaysia.
"I advise all parties wishing to introduce Bitcoin (style) cryptocurrency to refer first to Bank Negara Malaysia as it is the authority that will issue the decision on financial mechanism," Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng told parliament earlier this week.
Recent calls from Malaysian politicians to halt approval for a government-backed cryptocurrency issuance project until the regulations come into force have further amplified the need for a comprehensive regulatory framework.
Despite the regulatory challenges, Malaysia has actively sought to foster its relationship with blockchain technology. In November, the Education Ministry implemented a university degree verification system using blockchain, demonstrating the government's recognition of the technology's potential to enhance transparency and efficiency.
The upcoming regulations are expected to provide clarity and guidance for businesses and investors operating within Malaysia's cryptocurrency ecosystem. The SC's proactive approach to regulation is aimed at promoting responsible innovation, protecting consumers, and ensuring the integrity of the country's financial system.
As the cryptocurrency industry continues to evolve rapidly, Malaysia's commitment to comprehensive regulation positions it as a leader in the Southeast Asian region and a hub for responsible blockchain development.
