Germany Ordered Altcoin Project Worldcoin to Delete Data!

Dec 20, 2024 at 02:10 am

A key German privacy watchdog has ordered Sam Altman's World project to delete the biometric data it collects.

Germany Ordered Altcoin Project Worldcoin to Delete Data!

Germany’s Data Protection Supervisory Office of the State of Bavaria has ordered Sam Altman’s World project to delete the biometric data it collects, according to a statement on Wednesday.

The project collects biometric data by scanning people’s eyeballs to prove they are human.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Bavarian State Data Protection Supervisory Office emphasised the following points:

The company will be obliged to provide a deletion procedure in accordance with the provisions of the GDPR within one month of the decision coming into force. It will be obliged to give explicit consent for certain processing steps in the future … The deletion of certain data records previously collected without sufficient legal basis has been ordered ex officio.

The Bavarian State Data Protection Supervisory Office, or BayLDA, is tasked with implementing the General Data Protection Regulation, or GDPR, in the private sector.

Wednesday’s announcement concludes an investigation that began on 2023 April, according to the statement.

BayLDA also said earlier that Worldcoin had appealed the decision.

However, the statement does not provide further details on the matter.

Since its launch, World’s problems with national regulators have become an ongoing issue, with authorities taking action to limit the project’s collection and storage of biometric data.

The project, backed by OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman, has been saying for the past few months that World no longer stores biometric data.

He suggests that regulators are taking measures to address their concerns.

In a blog post, World made the following statements:

The consequences of BayLDA’s investigation are largely related to legacy operations and technologies that were replaced in 2024. In an effort to go beyond GDPR requirements, iris codes used to verify a person’s World ID are no longer stored, and previously collected iris codes have been voluntarily deleted to ensure that no personal data is retained to operate World ID.

As you have been following from Kriptokoin.com, World has received mixed reactions in Europe so far.

Peoje started operating in Austria in July.

The previous month, Spain extended its ban on the project until the end of the year or until the GDPR audit is completed.

Neighbouring Portugal ordered the project to temporarily stop collecting biometric data in March.

The altcoin project recently entered Brazil, with a population of more than 200 million people.

The project aims to provide digital identity to as many people as possible.

One of World’s core values is the belief that society will increasingly be populated by agents powered by artificial intelligence and that a system that separates humans from automated actors is necessary.

World uses small silver spheres to scan people’s pupils and prove that they are human.

After scanning a person and assigning them a World ID, the project issues WLD tokens to people.

Meanwhile, amid these developments, the WLD price fell sharply, driven by the market downturn.

The altcoin lost about 15 per cent on a daily basis.
