Director Han Jun-hee builds his signature style through hits like “D.P.” and “Weak Hero.”
May 12, 2025 at 11:49 am
Han stands out for mixing weighty themes with humor, delivering emotional impact without heaviness
Director Han Jun-hee is slowly but surely carving out a distinctive creative signature in Korean content with his unique approach to genre storytelling.
From the gritty military drama "D.P." to the high school action series "Weak Hero Class," Han's works have managed to resonate with both domestic and international audiences for their complex narratives and sharp social commentary.
Rather than relying solely on action, Han's storytelling integrates layered plotlines, blending suspense, drama and satire to highlight institutional violence and systemic injustice, often set within confined social spaces such as schools or military bases.
These themes have struck a chord with modern viewers who are increasingly drawn to stories that ask deeper questions about power and accountability.
Having made his feature debut with "Coin Locker Girl" and later directed titles such as "Hit-and-Run Squad," Han is now also active as a creative producer. In addition to his role as director, he has served as a creator on "Weak Hero" series and the recent drama "Tastefully Yours." His works consistently carry weighty themes and a satirical edge.
As a creator, Han's responsibilities extend far beyond scriptwriting. He oversees narrative direction, staffing and casting, and even supervises post-production.
In a recent interview about "Weak Hero Class 2," Han said that the creator role is still evolving in the Korean industry. "The position is still being defined," he said, adding that it shares many duties with an overall project planner.
Korean society's structural flaws
Han has long depicted the structural flaws of Korean society, drawing attention to injustices that often go unnoticed. His acclaimed Netflix series "D.P." gained praise not only in South Korea but also in countries without compulsory military service.
Its emotional impact lay in portraying characters’ individual journeys toward healing and justice, allowing audiences to empathize across cultural divides.
What sets Han apart is his ability to blend powerful messages with entertainment. His direction often includes unexpected humor even in the heaviest of contexts, creating emotional depth without overwhelming the viewer.
Speaking at a press conference for "D.P." Season 2, he said, "I hope viewers who watch this story will ask themselves, 'What can I do?'"
Such questions align directly with his artistic intent. Regarding the global appeal of his narratives, Han said, "The story of the weak struggling against the strong is universally compelling."
His works clearly delineate between victims and perpetrators, encouraging audiences to root for the underdog.
Critics have dubbed his body of work the emergence of a "Han Jun-hee genre." The "Weak Hero" series in particular has been praised for redefining the school action genre.
In response, Han said, "I’m grateful and also a bit embarrassed. Films about school life have always existed — every 10 years or so, a new one reflects the times. I believe ‘Weak Hero’ did that for our era."
He added, "I’m thankful for the praise about opening up a new genre. School dramas are classic, but Season 1 wasn’t easy. We had a rookie director, rookie actors and it was a school story with lots of fighting — many thought it was too niche. But the series received love, and more good school dramas followed. It’s important to have shows that reflect the issues students face in their time."
Han also reflected on his artistic vision: "I’m drawn to stories that feel just a little strange — different from the norm. Whether it’s about the military, school, or family, I want to explore systems. As a creator, nothing feels better than seeing fellow artists bring their ideas to life."
