Binance Stablecoin BUSD Wobbles Amid Regulatory Wave

May 12, 2024 at 03:00 am

Binance's stablecoin BUSD experiences volatility after regulatory action. The stablecoin, pegged to the US dollar, slipped to a discount against USDT after the New York Department of Financial Services ordered Paxos Trust Co., its issuer, to halt minting new tokens. The depegging raised concerns, with traders reportedly moving funds to tether due to the uncertainty surrounding BUSD's future.

Binance Stablecoin BUSD Faces Volatility Amid Regulatory Scrutiny

New York City, February 13, 2023 - Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange, has experienced volatility in its dollar-pegged stablecoin, BUSD, following regulatory action targeting its issuer, Paxos Trust Company.

Early Monday morning, BUSD, which is designed to maintain a 1:1 value with the US dollar, temporarily dipped to a discount of 0.9950 against its rival stablecoin, Tether (USDT), on Binance. This marks the lowest level of deviation from its peg in over a year.

The depegging occurred after the New York Department of Financial Services (NYDFS) ordered Paxos to cease minting new BUSD tokens. Paxos has subsequently announced that it will halt the issuance of new tokens from February 21st and terminate its relationship with Binance.

Despite the NYDFS order, Paxos has assured BUSD holders that all coins remain fully backed by a 1:1 reserve in US dollar-denominated assets. The company will continue to facilitate redemptions of the stablecoin, according to a statement released by Binance.

The decline in the BUSD/USDT trading pair on Binance suggests that some traders are migrating their funds to Tether.

"The suspension of BUSD issuance effectively limits the stablecoin's ability to grow," said Clara Medalie, Research Director at Kaiko. "Although Binance will continue to support BUSD trading pairs, traders may gradually shift towards other stablecoins, causing the current discount."

However, some market analysts believe that the dip in BUSD's value may be temporary, as Paxos has committed to honoring redemptions despite ceasing new token issuance. BUSD currently represents approximately 35% of the total trading volume on Binance.

This regulatory action and the subsequent volatility in BUSD highlight the ongoing regulatory scrutiny of stablecoins and the potential impact on the cryptocurrency ecosystem. Binance and Paxos are yet to release further updates on the situation.
