Arborists Explore Rich Tree Tapestry in Guided Walk

Apr 17, 2024 at 11:09 am

About twenty-five people participated in the "Discovering Our Trees" walking tour this year. The route included the town hall's fruit tree plantations and the area where Pierre and Ralph planted tree seeds with elementary school children in December 2023, resulting in the growth of twenty small peach trees.

A Journey of Arboriculture: An Exploration of Rich Tree Diversity

In an immersive exploration of local arboreal heritage, approximately 25 individuals embarked on a guided walk entitled "Discovering Our Trees." The meticulously curated route meandered through various tree plantations established by the local municipality, offering participants an up-close encounter with the diverse flora that enriches their surroundings.

The itinerary commenced at the municipality's fruit tree plantations, where attendees were greeted by the vibrant hues of blossoming trees. Continuing along the designated path, they stumbled upon a site where Pierre and Ralph had sown tree seeds with local schoolchildren in December 2023. To their delight, they witnessed the emergence of twenty nascent peach trees.

Venturing deeper into the verdant landscape, the walkers approached a meticulously landscaped green space adjacent to the railway and the Pump Track. From this vantage point, they could discern the vast expanse of the municipality's arboricultural endeavors, including approximately thirty trees and a verdant border. The majestic mulberry, its leaves unfurling in anticipation of spring, stood as a testament to the municipality's commitment to preserving its natural heritage.

"We paused before the remarkable cedar ensconced within the garden of Gachepel, which now graces the grounds of the Nalanda Monastery," remarked Ralph. "Before the monastery, a magnificent avenue of cedars leads to the residence, while a row of century-old oaks lines the roadside."

The group's exploration extended to other notable trees within the municipality, including the protected parasol pine towering over the commune's sole vineyard, and a variety of holm oaks, lime trees, and acacia trees. The future hiking trail, which was incorporated into the route, led the walkers through a woodland realm teeming with holly, bird cherry, hornbeam, and oak trees.

Midway through their trek, the walkers found respite beneath a canopy of pine trees atop the Sentier des Arbres, where heartfelt poems adorned the branches. After a delightful picnic, the group bid farewell to half its members and continued their journey, visiting the Arbres Amoureux (Lover's Trees) before descending into the Lesparre woods along the designated trail.

Along the route, they encountered an ancient oak tree valiantly clinging to life on an embankment opposite a farmhouse, its branches reaching out over the expanse of a field. The embankment itself played host to a thriving community of spruce, ash, and hornbeam trees.

The Route de Briatexte, a serene thoroughfare flanked by a meandering stream, provided nourishment for willow and poplar trees. Upon crossing the Rue de Lavaur, the walkers marveled at the stately plane trees adorning the town square, rejuvenated by pruning in 2022. Further along, the chestnut trees of Place Charles-De-Gaulle stood resplendent, their blossoms on the cusp of unfolding.

The walk concluded at the iconic pigeon tower and the serene Agout riverbank, where the group reveled in the company of majestic poplars, alders, and witch hazel. This journey through time and nature served as a poignant reminder of the transformative power of trees and the enduring legacy they bequeath upon future generations.
