Coin Collection Programme

2025/05/13 17:58

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) is introducing a new service schedule for the two Coin Carts used in the Coin Collection Programme. This will commence on June 2, 2025, and run up to August 17, 2025. Further details regarding the Programme, including the schedule and other information, can be accessed on the HKMA webpage at coincollection.hkma.gov.hk.

The two Coin Carts, deployed as part of the Coin Collection Programme, will continue their service in collecting coins from members of the public at various locations throughout the 18 districts of Hong Kong on a rotating basis.

The Coin Carts will be providing service at locations that offer convenience to the public without causing any hindrance to the normal flow of traffic or pedestrians. Priority will be given to locations with suitable power supply facilities, such as those utilized by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department for their mobile library services. This will minimize the need for using the Coin Carts' own stand-by generators, rendering the Programme more environmentally friendly.

In the process of selecting the service locations, the HKMA has taken into account the feedback and suggestions received from district councils and members of the public. They will also consult with the Transport Department and the Hong Kong Police Force as required.

Each Coin Cart will typically remain at a location for a period of one week, subject to the availability of the parking space and the maintenance schedule of the Cart. The service hours at each location will be from 10am to 7pm. Both vehicles are equipped with two coin counting machines, and operational staff will be on hand to assist users. An electrical wheelchair lift is also available for the convenience of wheelchair users.

Coins collected by the Coin Carts can be exchanged for banknotes or used for adding value to stored value facilities, such as Octopus Cards and e-wallets (including AlipayHK, Octopus Wallet, Tap&Go and WeChat Pay). There will also be a Community Chest donation box inside each vehicle. The coin collection service itself is provided free of charge.

The HKMA will be carrying out a regular review of the Coin Collection Programme and will update the service schedule on a regular basis to provide advance notice to the public.
