Thai Authorities Cracks Down on Massive-Scale Illegal Bitcoin Mining Operation

Bangkok, Thailand - Thai police have conducted a major raid on an illicit bitcoin mining operation, confiscating approximately $1.9 million worth of equipment, authorities announced on Friday. The operation targeted a disused ice manufacturing facility in Samut Sakhon, located in western Thailand, after receiving intelligence regarding unusually high electricity consumption.

"We uncovered a total of 690 (bitcoin-mining) units," Samut Sakhon City Police Chief Pichetpong Changkaikhon informed AFP, estimating their collective value at $1.9 million (69 million baht). The seizure also included an electrical transformer, laptops, and aluminum cables.

A Myanmar national was apprehended on the premises, and police are actively investigating several individuals, including the facility's owner and property leaseholder.

According to Chief Pichetpong, this raid ranks among the largest bitcoin mining operations dismantled within the city, eclipsing previous seizures. "We've conducted other raids targeting unlawful bitcoin mining, but none of them have been of this magnitude in a single location," he remarked.

Last week, officers from the Technology Crime Suppression Division executed raids on two separate locations: a section of a Chinese temple in Ratchaburi and a warehouse in Samut Songkhram. A total of 187 and 465 bitcoin mining machines were confiscated, valued at approximately $5 million.

Illegal bitcoin mining has proliferated in Thailand, driven by the insatiable energy demands of cryptocurrency mining farms. Consequently, authorities are frequently alerted to potential illicit activities through reports of substantial power surges.

The surge in illegal bitcoin mining has raised concerns over its environmental implications. Bitcoin mining operations require vast amounts of electricity, leading to criticism for their contribution to climate change.

The Thai government has adopted a strict approach towards unauthorized bitcoin mining, emphasizing the need to combat energy theft and protect the electricity grid.

"We will continue to crack down on illegal bitcoin mining and bring those responsible to justice," Chief Pichetpong declared. "We want to safeguard our power resources and prevent the exploitation of our electricity infrastructure."

The recent raids serve as a testament to the government's determination to regulate and control cryptocurrency mining activities in Thailand. Authorities remain committed to enforcing environmental protection laws and ensuring that all electricity consumption complies with legal and regulatory frameworks.
