PM Modi to Release Rs 50 Commemorative Coin Marking Sikkim's 50th Anniversary

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Sikkim on May 28, 2025, to release a Rs 50 commemorative coin during a large-scale public ceremony at Paljor Stadium, Gangtok.

The event will mark 50 years since Sikkim joined the Indian Union on May 16, 1975.

Also present at the ceremony will be Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, state ministers, and other prominent figures.

The Prime Minister's visit was announced by CM Tamang on May 14, 2025, during a press conference at the State Secretariat in Gangtok.

According to renowned numismatist Shri Sudhir Lunawat, the Rs 50 commemorative coin will be minted in 40 grams of pure silver.

One side of the coin will feature an artistic design depicting Sikkim's 50-year journey, with the inscription "50 Glorious Years of Sikkim" in Hindi along the upper rim and English along the lower rim.

The reverse side of the coin will display the Lion Capital of Ashoka, with the ₹ symbol and the numeral 50 positioned below it. The word "भारत" (Bharat) in Hindi will be on the left side, and "India" will be on the right.

Manufactured by the Government of India Mint in Kolkata, the coin was officially announced through a Gazette Notification issued by the Ministry of Finance on May 13, 2025.

The non-circulating coin will be available to collectors via the Kolkata Mint after its release.

The "Golden Jubilee Conclave" at Paljor Stadium will also highlight cultural programs, exhibitions, and interactive sessions showcasing Sikkim's past, its progress in various fields, and its dedication to responsible tourism and a clean environment.

Prime Minister Modi is anticipated to speak about how Sikkim has transformed into a socio-culturally vibrant, environmentally conscious, and forward-looking state.
