Bhagwan Mahaveer Nirvan Mahotsav: Prime Minister Modi Underscores the Timeless Relevance of Jain Teachings for India and the World

New Delhi, April 5, 2023

In a stirring address marking the 2550th Bhagwan Mahaveer Nirvan Mahotsav, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the magnificent Bharat Mandapam as a testament to the enduring legacy of Jainism and its revered founder.

Prime Minister Modi lauded the dedication and commitment of young students who performed a captivating dance drama titled "Vartaman mein Vardhaman," depicting the life and teachings of Bhagwan Mahaveer Swami. He hailed their performance as a beacon of hope, indicating the nation's march towards a brighter future guided by the timeless principles of Jainism.

The Prime Minister's presence at the Mahotsav was a gesture of deep reverence for the Jain community. He unveiled a commemorative stamp and coin to mark the auspicious occasion and expressed his heartfelt gratitude for the guidance and blessings of Jain saints.

Prime Minister Modi paid homage to Acharya Shri Vidyasagarji Maharaj, recalling his recent meeting with the venerable Acharya and acknowledging the profound influence of his wisdom and blessings.

The Prime Minister highlighted the profound significance of the 2550th Bhagwan Mahaveer Nirvan Mahotsav, noting its convergence with the Amrit Kaal, India's journey towards a golden century of independence. He also drew attention to the 75th anniversary of the Constitution and the upcoming festival of democracy, which will shape the future trajectory of the nation.

Prime Minister Modi emphasized that Amrit Kaal is not merely a resolution but a spiritual aspiration, an invitation to embrace immortality and eternal values. "We celebrate Bhagwan Mahaveer's Nirvan Diwas even after 2500 years, and I am confident that India will continue to revere his ideals for centuries to come," the Prime Minister declared.

The Prime Minister attributed India's resilience and enduring civilization to its farsighted vision, encompassing centuries and millennia. "India's strength lies in its ability to think not just for itself but for the entire world, to embrace all and believe in the unity of all," he affirmed.

Prime Minister Modi stressed that stagnation breeds division, while open dialogue can lead to new perspectives and transformation. He emphasized that the deliberations of the past 75 years should guide India's path in this Amrit Kaal.

"The teachings of our Tirthankaras are particularly relevant today, when many nations around the world are embroiled in conflicts," the Prime Minister observed. He cited philosophies like Anekantavada and Syadvada, which urge us to consider multiple viewpoints and embrace the perspectives of others.

The Prime Minister highlighted India's growing stature on the global stage, rooted in its cultural heritage, burgeoning capabilities, and proactive foreign policy. "Today, we confidently articulate the principles of truth and non-violence in international forums," he said. "We convey to the world that the solutions to global challenges lie within India's ancient wisdom and traditions."

Prime Minister Modi noted India's leadership in initiatives like Mission LiFE, One Earth One Family One Future, and One World-One Sun-One Grid, which address pressing issues like climate change and promote global unity.

"These initiatives have not only instilled hope in the world but have also transformed global perceptions of our culture and traditions," the Prime Minister asserted.

Speaking on the essence of Jainism, Prime Minister Modi described it as the path of Jin, the victorious. He emphasized that India has historically resisted territorial conquest, choosing instead to focus on self-improvement.

The Prime Minister highlighted the numerous celebrations that have taken place in India over the past decade, including the beautification of heritage sites, the promotion of Yoga and Ayurveda, and the instilling of pride in India's identity among the younger generation.

"India is a testament to the power of self-respect," the Prime Minister said. "When a nation awakens to its self-worth, it becomes unstoppable."

Prime Minister Modi stressed that modernity and spirituality are intertwined in India's ethos. "Without spirituality, modernity leads to anarchy," he cautioned. He urged citizens to embrace the teachings of Bhagwan Mahavir, whose values are more relevant than ever before.

The Prime Minister acknowledged India's emergence from a period of corruption and despair, with over 250 million citizens lifted out of poverty. He called upon all Indians to seize this moment, embrace the principles of non-violence and non-stealing, and collectively work towards securing the future of the nation.

The Prime Minister expressed his sincere gratitude to the Jain saints for their inspiring guidance and pledged to continue his unwavering commitment to serving the nation.

Among the dignitaries present at the occasion were Union Minister of Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal and several esteemed saints from the Jain community.
