Partial Recovery Possible for Ethereum User's $71 Million Crypto Loss

May 09, 2024 at 05:48 pm

An Ethereum user who accidentally sent $71 million in Wrapped Bitcoin to a scammer's address may receive a partial refund after the scammer, who used an "address poisoning" technique, initiated contact through the blockchain and returned 52 ETH ($156,000). The victim had initially requested a 90% refund, offering to let the scammer keep 10% as a "clean reward."

Partial Recovery Possible for Ethereum User's $71 Million Crypto Loss

Ethereum User's $71 Million Crypto Loss May Turn into Partial Recovery

In a perplexing turn of events, the Ethereum user who inadvertently sent $71 million worth of Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC) to a bogus address may be on the cusp of reclaiming their colossal loss. The incident, which occurred last week, raised eyebrows within the crypto community due to the audacious "address poisoning" scam that facilitated the theft.

The victim, identified only as the Ethereum address 0x1E227, succumbed to the scammer's cunning tactics on May 3, unknowingly dispatching 1,155 WBTC, equivalent to $71 million, into the wrong hands. The devastating loss prompted a desperate plea to the perpetrator via blockchain transactions, igniting a bizarre digital dialogue between victim and thief.

Partial Refund Fuels Hope for Full Recovery

Amidst the turmoil, a glimmer of hope emerged when the thief partially refunded the victim with 52 ETH, or approximately $156,000, on Thursday. Adding an intriguing twist, the thief appended a cryptic message to the transaction, "Please leave your Telegram and I will contact you," hinting at potential negotiations.

Unraveling the "Address Poisoning" Con

The audacious theft was orchestrated through a technique known as "address poisoning" or "wallet contamination." In this elaborate scheme, the scammer sends a seemingly innocuous zero-value transaction to the victim's wallet from an address meticulously crafted to closely resemble the victim's intended recipient. The goal is to trick the unsuspecting victim into inadvertently copying the bogus address into their transaction history.

"Address poisoning" hinges on the subtle visual similarity between the victim's actual target address and the scammer's address. In this case, both addresses shared the initial characters 0xd9A1 and the concluding 853a91, making them nearly indistinguishable within typical wallet interfaces.

Victim Pleads for Mercy, Thief Demands More

Following the colossal loss, the victim reached out to the thief, acknowledging their triumph and proposing a settlement: the return of 90% of the stolen funds, leaving the thief with a hefty 10% reward. The victim's plea resonated with a sense of desperation, evoking empathy amidst the chaos.

"We both know that $7 million will definitely make your life better, but $70 million won't let you sleep well," the victim implored.

However, the thief remained unmoved, countering the victim's request with an audacious demand: the transfer of $1.6 million in DAI stablecoin from the victim's remaining wallet balance. "If you don't, you won't hear from me again & I won't respond," the thief asserted.

Victim Escalates Threats, Community Pitches In

Undeterred, the victim retaliated with veiled threats, warning the thief of severe consequences if their initial offer was not accepted. "We both know there's no way to clean [these] funds. You will be traced," the victim stated. "We also both understand the 'sleep well' phrase wasn't about your moral and ethical qualities."

The escalating dialogue attracted attention from onlookers, some offering support to the victim and pledging to assist in tracking down the hacker, offering services to gather data such as IP addresses for a fee of $100,000. Surprisingly, others emerged in support of the scammer, applauding the theft and dismissing the victim's threats as empty bravado.

Lessons Learned, Caution Advised

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the ever-present threats lurking within the digital realm. Crypto users are urged to exercise extreme vigilance, meticulously verifying transaction details before sending funds to avoid falling prey to similar malicious schemes. The case also underscores the resilience and determination of victims who refuse to be silenced, seeking every available avenue to recoup their losses, even in the face of overwhelming setbacks.
