Monex Group Seeks Entry as Member of Facebook's Libra Alliance

May 08, 2024 at 03:03 am

Japanese financial services company Monex Group, which owns Coincheck crypto exchange, has applied to join Facebook's Libra project, alongside Visa, Mastercard, Uber, and eBay. Monex President Oki Matsumoto confirmed the application, stating that the company will make a final decision on joining after a primary review at the end of summer, citing Libra's potential for financial inclusion and international sales.

Monex Group Seeks to Join Facebook's Libra Consortium

Tokyo, Japan - Monex Group, the Japanese financial services conglomerate that owns the Coincheck cryptocurrency exchange, has formally submitted an application to join Facebook's ambitious Libra project. This move signals a growing interest from major financial institutions in the global cryptocurrency initiative.

At a quarterly results meeting on Thursday, Monex President Oki Matsumoto confirmed the company's intention to become a member of the Libra Association, a consortium of global organizations tasked with governing and managing the Libra stablecoin. The Libra Association currently boasts an impressive lineup of potential partners, including Visa, Mastercard, Uber, and eBay.

According to sources close to the matter, member companies are reportedly expected to contribute up to $10 million to join the Libra Association. Despite this hefty financial commitment, Visa CEO Alfred F. Kelly, Jr. recently clarified that the consortium's 28 members have yet to become official partners. However, they have signed nonbinding letters of agreement, paving the way for their eventual inclusion.

Matsumoto expressed Monex's enthusiasm for the Libra project, highlighting its potential to revolutionize financial services. He emphasized Libra's ability to promote financial inclusion by providing banking services to the unbanked population. Additionally, he recognized Libra's potential to facilitate international transactions, potentially unlocking new opportunities for cross-border trade.

The Monex application is currently undergoing a preliminary review by the Libra Association. A final decision on Monex's membership will be made after this review is complete.

The Libra project has generated significant interest within the financial sector since its inception. However, it has also faced scrutiny from regulators worldwide. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has vowed to work closely with regulators to address their concerns and ensure the project fully complies with existing financial laws.

The addition of Monex to the Libra Association would further bolster the project's credibility and demonstrate the increasing institutional adoption of cryptocurrencies. Monex's expertise in financial services, combined with Coincheck's experience in cryptocurrency trading, would add valuable assets to the Libra ecosystem.

As the Libra project continues to evolve, it remains to be seen whether it can fulfill its ambitious goals of providing financial inclusion and transforming global finance. However, the involvement of major financial institutions like Monex is a testament to the project's potential and the growing recognition of cryptocurrencies as a legitimate force in the global economy.
