A Mattoon man is getting special recognition from police after he jumped into action and saved someone from a burning vehicle.
A Mattoon man is getting special recognition from police after he jumped into action and saved someone from a burning vehicle.
On Nov. 6, Anthony Crum was driving on S. 19th St. when he came across a parked vehicle on fire on the side of the road, Mattoon Police said.
He checked the vehicle and saw it was filled with smoke, and the doors were locked.
Police said Crum started to walk away, thinking there was no one inside, but then heard pounding coming from inside the burning car.
He then saw there was someone in the driver's seat slapping the window.
Crum grabbed a baseball bat from his vehicle, used it to break out a window and was able to pull the driver out.
MPD said the driver was disoriented and confused.
Mattoon officers and the Mattoon Fire Department arrived on scene shortly after.
Capt. Ryan Koop reported that Crum's actions saved the driver's life. By the time officers arrived on scene the front of the vehicle was completely engulfed in flames.
Crum was presented with a Mattoon Police Department Challenge Coin.
