Macro Overview — Markets Brace for August Jobs Report
A key takeaway about the U.S. economy in recent years is that consumers, who are the lifeblood of its growth, continue to spend relentlessly. As the pandemic recession transitioned into a recovering labor market, American spending — whether through online purchases or credit card swipes — has been sustaining the economic expansion. With a potential Federal Reserve interest rate cut on the horizon, recent data showed a slowing inflation rate and resilient consumer spending despite rising borrowing costs. This scenario seems to align with Fed Chair Jerome Powell’s hopes for a soft landing for the economy.
However, there are still challenges. Income growth is slowing, the job market is softening and the savings rate is declining, which raises concerns about the sustainability of consumer spending. These factors warrant caution, especially after a turbulent few years marked by fears of a recession.
Looking ahead, the upcoming jobs report will provide critical insights into the labor market ahead of the Fed's policy meeting. Meanwhile, the European Central Bank has already begun cutting rates, as euro-area inflation fell to its lowest level since mid-2021. As Allison Schrager pointed out in Bloomberg Opinion, it's time for the U.S. government to step in and increase spending to help the economy grow, ensuring that the Federal Reserve isn't the sole driver of the recovery.
Weekly Crypto Highlight — Vitalik Doesn't Like Most DeFi
When Vitalik Buterin, the co-founder of Ethereum, shared his X thoughts on the sustainability of most decentralized finance (DeFi) projects, it sparked a major discussion within the crypto community. He suggested that many DeFi protocols are self-referential and not particularly respectable, adding that he had two main criteria for any DeFi protocol: It must be decentralized and sustainable. Buterin specifically criticized practices like 2021-era liquidity farming, which he argued was largely unsustainable due to token inflation.
Prominent figures in DeFi, like Sam Kazemian of Frax Finance, expressed disappointment, arguing that DeFi is critical to Ethereum's value (which exceeds $300 billion). Buterin’s comments seemed to imply that only decentralized exchanges (DEXs), stablecoins and platforms like Polymarket met his standards, as many DeFi protocols are still centralized and have no ties to the real economy.

The top five DeFi categories are liquid staking, lending, bridges, DEXs, and liquid staking, among which liquid staking, lending and staking might not meet Vitalik's requirements.
While some might find his critique a bit harsh, it does highlight a broader truth about the current state of DeFi. Buterin seems to be advocating for a more mature version of DeFi, one that connects better with the real-world economy. However, he might not be fully up-to-date on the latest developments in DeFi, since his focus is on improving Ethereum's core functionalities. Ultimately, his comments could steer builders toward more meaningful use cases, which would benefit the ecosystem in the long run.
Bitcoin Spot ETF Flows

Bitcoin Spot ETFs have been experiencing consecutive outflows for five days, which coincided with Bitcoin's drop below the $60,000 level. Its repeated failure to hold above this critical support suggests that traders are being cautious, possibly waiting for stronger signals before committing more capital.
To add to the uncertainty, there was no major economic data released this week to drive market movements. Investors are now looking for more definitive cues on Bitcoin's next directional move, including the upcoming August 2024 jobs report next Friday and any actions by central banks around the world.
