Indonesia Temporarily Suspends Operations of Worldcoin and World ID Crypto Projects

May 06, 2025 at 11:15 am

The Indonesian government has finally taken decisive action by temporarily suspending the operations of controversial crypto projects, Worldcoin and World ID,

The Indonesian government has temporarily suspended the operations of controversial crypto projects, Worldcoin and World ID, for allegedly violating regulations related to personal data protection.

The project, spearheaded by OpenAI co-founder Sam Altman, has stolen the public’s attention because of its data collection methods that are considered invasive and have the potential to jeopardize people’s privacy.

Data Scandal Shakes Up Digital Industry

The Indonesian government through the Ministry of Communications and Digital (Komdigi) recently announced the temporary suspension of World Network operations and WorldID services in Indonesia.

This step was taken after it was discovered that the operating entities were not officially registered and were using licenses that belonged to other companies.

This incident raises serious concerns about the security of user data and the operational integrity of foreign technology companies in the country.

Komdigi has taken swift action by summoning PT Terang Bulan Abadi and PT Sandina Abadi Nusantara, two local companies associated with World Network’s operations in Indonesia. This action is in response to public complaints suspecting suspicious activity related to the platform.

Suspension of Operations: Data Protection Measures

This suspension is a result of preliminary findings that show that PT Terang Bulan Abadi is not registered as a digital service provider.

“Non-compliance with registration obligations and the use of another legal entity’s identity to run digital services are serious offenses,” said Alexander Sabar, Director General of Digital Space Supervision.

Authorities urge the public to remain vigilant against unlicensed digital services and immediately report suspected violations through official public complaint channels. Komdigi plans to investigate further and ensure that all entities operating in the digital sector comply with applicable regulations.

This step is expected to restore public trust in digital services and protect users’ personal data from misuse.

International Reaction and Broader Implications

Not only in Indonesia, regulators in Brazil have also found that World Network may have influenced user consent by offering financial incentives for biometric data collection.

This practice, according to Brazil’s Autoridade Nacional de Proteção de Dados, may compromise the validity of consent, especially since the financial compensation offered, such as Worldcoin’s native ecosystem token
