Bitfinex Denies Database Breach, Insists on User Fund Security

May 06, 2024 at 05:49 pm

Bitfinex's CTO, Paolo Ardoino, refutes claims made by hacker group FSOCIETY of a database breach, alleging the information is "fake" and no ransom demands were made. The exchange asserts that user passwords and funds are secure, with no substantial evidence of a breach. Concerns remain regarding Bitfinex's security measures and the prevalence of past breaches, highlighting the significance of data integrity and user privacy.

Bitfinex Denies Database Breach, Insists on User Fund Security

Bitfinex Rejects Claims of Database Breach, Asserts User Funds Security

Amidst allegations of a database intrusion by the hacker organization FSOCIETY, Bitfinex's Chief Technology Officer, Paolo Ardoino, has vehemently denounced the accusations as "fake." Ardoino categorically refutes the purported leak of over 22,000 user emails and passwords, declaring that no ransom demands have been received and that user assets remain secure. The exchange's robust security measures and track record of past breaches have come under scrutiny as data integrity and user privacy concerns escalate.

Ardoino emphatically denies the veracity of FSOCIETY's claims, asserting their unsubstantiated nature and absence of any ransom requests. "If they had any credible information, they would have pursued it through our established bug bounty program, customer support channels, or other avenues of communication. No such request has been detected," Ardoino stated in a recent post on X.

Moreover, Ardoino underscores Bitfinex's stringent security protocols, emphasizing that plaintext passwords and two-factor authentication (2FA) secrets are not stored in an unencrypted format. Of the 22,500 emails and passwords allegedly compromised, only a fraction of around 5,000 are associated with Bitfinex users, Ardoino revealed.

Ardoino suggests that the hackers may have sourced the information from previous cryptocurrency data breaches, capitalizing on the common practice of reusing email addresses and passwords across multiple platforms. He also presented evidence from a security researcher indicating that the hackers' motives may be the promotion of a data recovery hacking tool by generating notoriety through claims of successful intrusions into prominent entities.

While the investigation into the alleged incident continues, Ardoino assures users that no breach has been identified to date and that user funds are fully protected. Bitfinex's history of security breaches has raised concerns amidst these latest allegations.

In November 2023, a minor information security breach at Bitfinex involved the hacking of a customer care representative's account, resulting in phishing attacks against Bitfinex users. However, Bitfinex maintained that the incident had minimal impact.

More significantly, in 2016, Bitfinex experienced a major security breach that resulted in the theft of 119,576 customer Bitcoins, valued at approximately $7.6 billion as of May 5. The incident remains one of the largest cryptocurrency exchange hacks in history.

As the investigation into the alleged database breach progresses, Bitfinex remains committed to ensuring the safety of user funds and the integrity of its platform. The exchange's ongoing efforts to strengthen its security measures and address any potential vulnerabilities will be critical in maintaining trust among its user base.
