Bitcoin Soars Past $65K, Crypto Market Cap Explodes
May 06, 2024 at 12:05 pm
Bitcoin has surpassed $65,000 for the first time in over a week, while the overall cryptocurrency market capitalization has reached $2.5 trillion. Meanwhile, Bitcoin's birthday has coincided with a surge in daily transactions, driven by the up-and-coming Runes protocol, which has processed more than half of all recent transactions on the network.

Bitcoin Surges Past $65,000, Crypto Market Capitalization Soars
October 17, 2023
New York, NY - Bitcoin, the world's leading cryptocurrency, commenced Monday's trading session at a price point exceeding $65,000 for the first time in over a week. While the price has slightly retraced since then, it remains 0.5% higher than its value at this time yesterday.
The positive momentum experienced by Bitcoin has had a significant impact on the overall cryptocurrency market, resulting in a surge in the aggregate market capitalization. According to data provided by CoinGecko, the global cryptocurrency market capitalization has reached $2.5 trillion, representing a 1.3% gain over the past 24 hours.
At the time of writing, the price of Bitcoin has retreated to $64,264.08, which is nevertheless 3% higher than its value a week ago. The total trading volume for Bitcoin in the past day has amounted to $13 billion, with Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange by volume, accounting for approximately 22% of that volume.
First Digital USD (FDUSD) Emerges as Popular Trading Pair on Binance
Among the trading pairs available on Binance for Bitcoin investors, the First Digital USD (FDUSD) stablecoin has emerged as the most widely utilized, as per data from CoinGecko. Launched by Hong Kong-based company First Digital Labs in 2023, FDUSD has facilitated $3 billion worth of trading volume over the past day.
Bitcoin Transactions Reach Historic Milestone
The world's oldest and largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization recently celebrated a significant milestone, with the Bitcoin network now having processed over 1 billion transactions. Notably, the number of daily Bitcoin transactions surged to an all-time high last year, largely attributed to the growing popularity of BRC-20 tokens and ordinals.
However, a new protocol known as Runes has emerged as the primary driver behind the recent increase in daily transactions. According to data from a Dune dashboard, the Bitcoin network processed 304,306 Runes transactions yesterday, while traditional "good old BTC" transactions accounted for 193,439, and Ordinals and BRC-20 transactions combined reached approximately 4,000. This indicates that Runes transactions constituted roughly 60% of all transactions on the network yesterday.
Runes: A Protocol for Fungible Token Creation
Runes is a protocol built on top of Bitcoin, designed to facilitate the creation of fungible tokens on the network. It aims to improve the efficiency of this process compared to BRC-20 tokens, which essentially introduced NFT-like assets to Bitcoin. Runes has ushered in a new era of "shitcoins" for the cryptocurrency, akin to the early days of Bitcoin itself.
Recent Developments in the Bitcoin Ecosystem
Aside from the surge in transactions driven by Runes, several other noteworthy developments have occurred in the Bitcoin ecosystem over the weekend.
One notable event involved the movement of 687 Bitcoin from a 13-year-old wallet that had held the cryptocurrency since its trading price was $2. This movement was highlighted by Vivek Sen, founder of Bitgrow, on Twitter earlier this morning.
While the reason for the fund movement remains unknown, traders often interpret it as a positive sign when long-term holders maintain their Bitcoin positions, even during periods of significant appreciation. As Sen remarked, "The owner of the wallet hodled all the way from $2 to 65,000. What a legend!"
