Alpen Labs to Expand Bitcoin's Utility via Cryptographic Layer

Apr 11, 2024 at 02:25 am

Alpen Labs emerges from stealth with $10.6 million in funding, building a programmable layer on Bitcoin using zero-knowledge proofs (ZKPs). This layer aims to expand Bitcoin's utility by enabling diverse applications such as on-chain payments, custody, stablecoins, and verifiable credentials.

Alpen Labs Unveils Cryptographic Infrastructure for Expanding Bitcoin's Utility

Mountain View, CA, June 2, 2023 - Alpen Labs, a blockchain infrastructure company, has emerged from stealth mode after securing $10.6 million in a funding round led by Rabbit Capital. The fundraising attracted participation from Castle Island Ventures, Geometry Research, Village Global, Stillmark, Paxos, Robot Ventures, Axiom, and others.

Alpen Labs is pioneering the development of a programmable layer on Bitcoin, utilizing zero-knowledge proofs to enhance the utility of the world's largest cryptocurrency. Over the past two years, the company has been building a scaling layer based on zk-proofs, a cutting-edge cryptographic technique.

"We envision a programmable, scalable layer on Bitcoin as the cornerstone for on-chain finance," said Alpen in a statement. "This layer will support a wide range of applications, from payments and lending to custody, stablecoins, verifiable credentials, and future use cases yet to be conceived."

Zero-knowledge rollups, a type of zk-proof, offer significant scalability benefits. They allow complex computations to be performed off-chain, significantly reducing transaction costs and network congestion. By leveraging zk rollups, Alpen Labs aims to unlock new possibilities for Bitcoin applications.

"With zk-proofs, we can enable powerful applications that preserve the security and immutability of the Bitcoin blockchain," said Alpen. "This will open up new avenues for innovation and growth within the Bitcoin ecosystem."

This announcement comes amidst a broader evolution of the Bitcoin ecosystem. Once primarily a decentralized ledger for cryptocurrency transactions, Bitcoin is now transitioning into a diverse network that supports a growing number of decentralized applications (dApps).

Over the past year, initiatives such as Ordinals Market have introduced NFTs to Bitcoin, while other startups have developed DeFi protocols and token standards. Alpen Labs' programmable layer is expected to further accelerate this transformation by providing a robust infrastructure for dApp development.

Alpen Labs is led by a team with extensive experience in the blockchain industry, including individuals from Blockstream Research, Nethermind, Aleo, Palantir, and MIT. The company plans to unveil its platform soon and will continue to develop its programmable layer in public view.

This funding round is a testament to the growing interest in Bitcoin's expansion beyond a simple blockchain. Alpen Labs' infrastructure has the potential to unlock new use cases and enhance the utility of Bitcoin, solidifying its position as a cornerstone of the decentralized finance landscape.
