In mid-2019, Keith Gill, a financial planner for an insurance firm in Massachusetts, began documenting a single $53,000 investment in GameStop on Reddit under the username Roaring Kitty.

Keith Gill, or Roaring Kitty, became well-known for his role in the GameStop stock price surge in January 2021, an event also known as a short squeeze.

The young analyst aggressively promoted the idea that GameStop shares were heavily undervalued. At the time, the pandemic was sweeping the globe. Before all this, GameStop had fallen on hard times. Many institutional investors and hedge funds viewed GME stock as overvalued, leading them to take short positions, betting on the decline of the company's shares.

One share of GME was worth about $4.56 on Jan. 4, 2021. However, by Jan. 27, the price had soared to a peak of $347.51 per share, according to TradingView data.

This surge was largely attributed to users of the r/WallStreetBets subreddit, including Keith Gill, who noticed the increasing number of short positions in GME and decided to create a short squeeze by drumming up interest in GameStop.

As a result, when the price of GME breached new highs, hedge funds with short positions in GameStop had to panic-buy shares at whatever the cost to cover their losses.

Members of the community interpreted Roaring Kitty's return to social media as a sign, leading them to buy up GameStop shares and pumping meme coins in anticipation of something big.
