A recent publication by the European Central Bank (ECB) has sparked a strong response from the Bitcoin community. The paper, titled “The Distributional Consequences of Bitcoin,” argues that while early adopters of BTC may experience increased consumption and wealth accumulation, this comes at the expense of non-holders and latecomers, who could face impoverishment.

In his view, the publication is a clear indication of the authorities’ intent to use such arguments to justify harsh taxes or bans on BTC.

He adds that the authors' suggestion to prevent Bitcoin prices from rising or to eliminate Bitcoin altogether to prevent societal division is a concerning overstep.

Expanding on his apprehensions, Demeester warns of the potential long-term consequences of the ECB’s position. He notes that many have anticipated Bitcoin becoming a major political fault line, and the ECB's paper serves as a clear example. In his view, the situation presents a clash of ideologies between those who advocate for individual natural rights and those who support collectivism and central planning.

He points to higher capital gains on BTC in Italy, a proposed exit tax in The Netherlands, and difficulties obtaining a mortgage in the UK if crypto earnings are used to purchase real estate.

He adds that the vilification of early adopters and the suggestion that Bitcoin should disappear to prevent societal division are concerning statements, especially coming from an institution like the ECB.

Initially, Porter stated, “Anti-Bitcoin ECB paper to be slammed shortly by a full academic rebuttal. New paper inbound. If you’re interested in contributing, let me know. Or tag those you think we should be chatting with.”
