Bitcoin's Inability to Replace Fiat Currencies: Experts Reiterate Concerns
Amid the ongoing maturation of Bitcoin (BTC), proponents have touted its potential to supplant fiat currencies, citing its adoption as legal tender in El Salvador. However, Professor Steve Hanke, an applied economics professor at Johns Hopkins University, has maintained his long-held skepticism towards Bitcoin, emphasizing its inability to challenge fiat currencies or precious metals like gold.
In an interview with David Lin published on May 12th, Hanke asserted that the prospects of Bitcoin replacing fiat currencies were akin to a "sideshow in Las Vegas." His sentiments align with a period marked by increased institutional investment in Bitcoin, largely driven by the introduction of exchange-traded funds (ETFs).
"We're talking about a sideshow that happens in places like Las Vegas," Hanke said. "As I've said since day one, Bitcoin is a highly speculative asset with zero fundamental value."
Hanke has previously expressed strong opposition to El Salvador's decision to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender, warning that such a move could lead to economic collapse. As reported by Finbold, the renowned economist suggested that corruption was a significant factor in countries' decisions to endorse Bitcoin.
Echoing Hanke's sentiments, economist Peter Schiff, who also participated in the interview, dismissed Bitcoin as a "non-event," describing it as a sideshow with minimal impact on the broader financial landscape.
"It's important to the people who have bought it, and they're going to end up losing a lot of money if they don't sell it. But somebody's got to get caught holding the bag because somebody's going to own it when the music stops," Schiff said.
Schiff's skepticism extended to Bitcoin's potential to replace conventional assets such as gold or fiat currencies.
"Central banks aren't going to buy it," he asserted. "It's not going to replace gold, not to mention any of these fiat currencies."
Schiff is known for his criticism of Bitcoin, questioning its intrinsic value and labeling it a failure due to factors such as transaction fees.
Hanke has further suggested that Bitcoin could face a "catastrophic crash" resulting from large amounts of BTC entering spot ETFs, rendering it more vulnerable. He contends that buyers of BTC ETFs are unlikely to be genuine believers in the asset.
Currently, Bitcoin is facing bearish pressure and resistance at approximately $65,000. At the time of writing, BTC was trading at approximately $61,183.
