The U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) released its Personal Income and Outlays report for April 2024 on Friday, offering a glimpse into the nation’s economic health.

The report indicated modest increases in personal income, disposable personal income (DPI), and personal consumption expenditures (PCE). However, the PCE Price Index remained largely unchanged at 2.7% annually in April, despite rising 0.3% on a monthly basis.

The BEA's report showed that personal income rose by $65.3 billion (0.3% at a monthly rate) in April, while DPI increased by $40.2 billion (0.2%). PCE also saw an increase of $39.1 billion (0.2%).

The PCE price index, a measure of inflation watched closely by the Federal Reserve, rose by 0.3%, with a 0.2% increase when excluding food and energy. Meanwhile, real DPI and real PCE both decreased by 0.1%. Personal saving stood at $744.5 billion, with a saving rate of 3.6%.

The report further detailed the changes in spending patterns, highlighting the categories that contributed the most to the increase in services spending, including housing and utilities, health care, and financial services and insurance. In contrast, the most significant decreases in goods spending were observed in recreational goods and vehicles and other nondurable goods.
