Boniface Kanyamwaya, a journalist at TUKO.co.ke, has more than 10 years of experience in finance, economics, business, markets, and aviation, providing insights into Kenyan and global trends.

The Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) has informed its customers that they cannot obtain their tokens via mobile money.

The suspension of token purchases via its 888880 paybill on mobile wallets has been caused by a technical hitch.

The electricity distributor has therefore advised its clients to buy tokens via their banks as they work round the clock to resolve the, issue.

Banks where customers can purchase electricity tokens

In Kenya, the banks that support electricity payments are National Bank, Family Bank, Co-operative Bank, NCBA Bank, KCB, and Equity Bank.

Only six banks support electricity billing: Equity Bank, KCB, NCBA Bank, and Co-operative Bank.

The others are Family Bank and National Bank of Kenya.

Acquiring electricity tokens has been a major challenge for KPLC customers in the last few months.

The company has, in the past, announced successive power interruptions of token purchases, sometimes caused by hitches in mobile money products like M-Pesa.

When these interruptions occur, customers are usually advised to seek alternative means to buy their tokens.

The situation is further complicated by frequent power outages that the electricity distributor keeps announcing every day across the country.

Power outages by the electricity distributor are usually seen as part of routine maintenance exercises aimed at upgrading power lines, connecting new customers, and supporting infrastructure development such as road construction.

Unavailability of power, even for 10 minutes, causes huge financial losses to business owners.

Kenya Power to set up more electric vehicle charging points

Meanwhile, KPLC has plans to set up 45 electric vehicle (EV) charging points in the country over the next 12 months.

The charging points will be set up in counties such as Nairobi, Nyeri, Kisumu, Eldoret, Nakuru, Mombasa, and Taita Taveta.

These electric vehicle charging points will add to the three charging points that Kenya Power already has in the country.

The rationale behind adding more EV charging points in Kenya is part of a wider plan to push for the adoption of e-mobility in the country.
