Worldcoin Rebrands as “World” and Launches New Version of Its Biometric Orb Device
Oct 18, 2024 at 07:09 pm
Worldcoin, co-founded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, has been rebranded as “World” and launched a new version of its biometric Orb device.

Worldcoin, co-founded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, has announced a new brand name, “World,” and launched a new version of its biometric Orb device.
At the World event held on October 17 in San Francisco, Blania and Altman, co-inventors of World, announced three key components of World: World Chain, World ID, and Worldcoin. The company also unveiled a new version of its iris-scanning device, the Orb.
The company said in a blog post that the name change was necessary because “Worldcoin” no longer fits its mission to accelerate the role of humanity in an AI-powered future.
World's Next-Gen Orb and Key Components
The revamped Orb, World's primary tool for identity verification, is powered by Nvidia Corp.'s Jetson chipset and features both infrared and visible light cameras for enhanced image quality and fraud detection, even in low-light settings. The device is also 5G-enabled and includes new features like a removable SD card.
According to the company, the latest Orb model is designed with 30% fewer parts, enabling faster assembly and facilitating third-party manufacturing, which aligns with World's goal of decentralization.
In addition to the Orb launch, the company also introduced World ID 3.0, an updated system that offers enhanced privacy and identity management capabilities. Among the features are World ID Credentials, which allow users to verify personal information such as age and nationality using NFC-enabled passports through the World App.
Another key innovation is World ID Deep Face, which aims to combat AI-enabled fraud by using secure multiparty computation (AMPC) for strong data protection. The system is designed to bolster the security of the World ID ecosystem as it expands globally.
The Future of World's Cryptocurrency Token
Launched in July 2023 by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Worldcoin initially focused on building a global digital identity system using biometric verification. At launch, the project had over two million users from its beta phase and expanded to 35 cities across 20 countries.
While the company has now shifted its primary focus to identity products with the World ID system, the future of its cryptocurrency token, WLD, remains unclear. It is yet to be seen whether this emphasis on identity verification will impact WLD's adoption or value in the market.
