The United States Mint Partners with Warner Bros. Discovery to Immortalize the Man of Steel on Official Currency
May 23, 2025 at 12:14 pm
The United States Mint is making history this summer with the launch of an unprecedented coin and medal series that celebrates comic art as a distinctly American cultural contribution.
The United States Mint is launching an all-new coin and medal series this summer, making it a new era for collecting. The program will celebrate comic art as a distinctly American cultural contribution. In a first-of-its-kind partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products, the Mint will feature DC Super Heroes on genuine U.S. coins and medals, kicking off with none other than Superman—the world’s first superhero.
This partnership marks a significant milestone for both parties. For the Mint, it marks the first time it’s collaborating with a private company for a public coin or medal program. It also recognizes a new chapter in how America commemorates its cultural heritage. The new Comic Art Coin and Medal Program will highlight comic books not just as a source of entertainment, but also as an art form that uniquely embodies American values of heroism, hope, and strength.
“We are thrilled to debut the Superman medal as part of the new Comic Art Coin and Medal Program,” said Kristie McNally, Acting Director of the U.S. Mint. “This launch marks the beginning of a historic collaboration with Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products and represents a major milestone as the Mint embarks on its first public-private collaboration.”
The project also brings together comic book expertise and traditional minting craftsmanship through Chief Engraver Joseph Menna, who uniquely bridges both worlds. Having previously designed for DC Comics, Menna now applies his comic art experience to official American currency.
“As both the Chief Engraver and a lifelong comic book fan, it’s my greatest pleasure to see the Superman medal struck,” Menna explained. “The Superman medal represents the strength we have in all of us, that we can all be Super Heroes.”
The series will be available in summer 2025 across three distinct formats:
24-karat gold coins—Premium collector pieces
.999 fine silver medals—Each accompanied by a serialized Certificate of Authenticity
Non-precious metal (clad) medals—Accessible options for all collectors
The coin designs themselves are filled with symbolic elements that pay homage to Superman’s dual identity and American roots. The obverse, designed and sculpted by Menna, shows Superman soaring over his family farm—the Kansas landscape where Clark Kent learned the values that would shape his heroic destiny. The sun that nourishes the farmland also powers Superman’s abilities, while the love and principles instilled by Ma and Pa Kent are what truly made him a superhero.
Medallic Artist Joseph V. Noorigian designed and sculpted the reverse, which captures the moment when young Clark begins to realize his potential. The image shows Clark watching a plane flying overhead while Pa Kent looks on from a distance, aware that his son will soon leave to fulfill a greater purpose.
“We are honored to immortalize Superman, a pop culture icon, through this historic partnership with the U.S. Mint,” said Preston Kevin Lewis, Head of Consumer Products & Retail Strategy for Warner Bros. Discovery. “The Superman coin and medal designs highlight Superman’s heroism and humble roots in DC’s comic books and commemorate the world’s first Super Hero.”
This launch marks the beginning of the new Comic Art Coin and Medal Program, which aims to recognize and celebrate a uniquely American art form. By including comic art in its program, the U.S. Mint acknowledges how these stories and characters have shaped cultural values and inspired generations to believe in heroism, justice, and hope.
