Stellantis Workers Vote to Authorize Strike Over Safety Concerns
May 07, 2024 at 09:02 am
Approximately 1,000 workers at a Stellantis metal stamping plant in Warren, Michigan, have voted to authorize a strike due to ongoing health and safety concerns, including ventilation issues, inadequate equipment, and flooding. The United Auto Workers (UAW) union is representing the workers, with negotiations currently underway between the union and Stellantis. The strike authorization vote allows the UAW to call a strike if negotiations fail to resolve the outstanding issues, potentially impacting production of several Stellantis vehicles.

Stellantis Workers Authorize Strike Amid Safety Concerns
Warren, Michigan - Approximately 1,000 employees at a Stellantis metal stamping facility located north of Detroit have voted to authorize a potential strike, citing pressing health and safety concerns, the United Auto Workers (UAW) union announced.
While the union has declined to provide immediate information regarding the establishment of a strike deadline, Stellantis has released a statement confirming ongoing negotiations and the continuation of work at the Warren, Michigan plant.
The UAW has documented numerous grievances related to inadequate ventilation systems, ineffective ergonomic measures, inadequate personal protective equipment, persistent flooding, insufficient basement lighting, oil leaks, and other safety hazards.
"Our members deserve to be treated with dignity and respect," stated Romaine McKinney III, President of UAW Local 869. "They must feel a sense of ownership and safety in their workplace."
The facility serves as a critical supplier for several Stellantis plants, including those in Windsor, Ontario, and Saltillo, Mexico. The UAW has indicated that a potential strike could disrupt production of popular models such as the Ram pickup, Jeep Wrangler, and Jeep Wagoneer.
In response, Stellantis has issued a statement emphasizing its commitment to ensuring a safe and healthy work environment for all employees. The company has expressed its intent to resolve the dispute without resorting to a work stoppage.
Negotiations between the UAW and Stellantis are ongoing, and it remains unclear whether a strike will ultimately materialize. However, the authorization vote represents a significant escalation in the labor dispute and highlights the serious concerns raised by the workers regarding their health and safety.
