Sam Altman's Worldcoin Is Dropping the 'Coin' in Its Name to Focus on Its Identification Technology
Oct 18, 2024 at 07:20 am
The OpenAI CEO's startup is shifting from cryptocurrency to focus more on its identification technology and it just unveiled a new version of its signature gadget.

Sam Altman's startup Worldcoin is dropping the “coin” in its name and pivoting to focus on its identification technology.
Bloomberg reports that the new company, simply called World, will use its eye scanning tech to confirm identities, a service that could prove useful in a world saturated with deep fake videos.
Co-founder and CEO Alex Blania unveiled the latest version of World's signature gadget, a biometric eye scanner used to confirm human identities through an identity service called Deep Face.
The latest model of the Orb, powered by NVIDIA's Jetson chipset, will be rolled out to customers as needed. At a San Francisco event, Chief Device Officer Rich Heley likened the access to the Orb to the way people order pizza.
“These advancements make it possible to offer new ways of providing World ID's proof of human verification in more places around the world,” a statement from the company reads.
According to the company's website, nearly 7 million people have been scanned by World Orbs to date. Everyone who attended the San Francisco launch event received a free Orb for their human identifying needs.
