Conway city leaders approved an $85 million spending plan Monday that will include a 16% property tax increase next year.

While some residents expressed concerns about the tax hike, Conway officials said the increase is necessary to keep up with rising costs, particularly for city employees.

“This is something that we have to do,” Councilman William Goldfinch said of the tax increase. “We have no other option. Our police officers and all of our employees deserve a living wage, and the only way to do this is to increase our millage, especially in a reassessment year.”

Meanwhile, the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce has an annual tax budget of $54 million, yet few locals ever raise a whimper.

The chamber sells the tax to local businesses, which then becomes private dollars that the chamber can use as it pleases.
