Raid Reveals Bitcoin Mine in Ratchaburi

Ratchaburi is a town west of Bangkok in Thailand. After residents complained about continuous power disruptions, officials busted an illegal Bitcoin mining facility there.

Raid Reveals Bitcoin Mine in Ratchaburi

Authorities in Thailand conducted a raid on a Bitcoin mining operation in Ratchaburi following a month of unexplained power outages in the area, which were later discovered to be caused by the illegal mining setup.

A town situated west of Bangkok in Thailand, officials busted an illegal Bitcoin mining facility in Ratchaburi after residents began complaining about continuous power disruptions.

The raid, which took place on August 23, uncovered evidence suggesting that the illicit mining operations were likely the culprit behind the month-long power outages in the region, the South China Morning Post reports.

Residents started reporting unexpected power outages in mid-July, which prompted authorities to launch an investigation into the matter.

After these disturbances sparked concern, the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) and the local police were able to pinpoint the cause of the power outage to one property.

Upon inspecting the property, officials discovered that it housed a Bitcoin mining rig.

According to Jamnong Chanwong, the chief district security officer, the operators may have been stealing power to fuel their operations, given the property's extraordinarily high electricity use and suspiciously low payments for that electricity.

A firm installed Bitcoin mining equipment after renting the residence for about four months. Authorities noted that the major power interruptions occurred around the time the mining operation was likely running at full capacity.

However, the raid did not result in any arrests, and the inquiry remains active. The operators reportedly fled after learning that their actions had come to the attention of the authorities.

In Southeast Asia, an increasing number of operators are engaging in illegal Bitcoin mining, utilizing the region's cheap electricity to evade paying the high energy bills associated with the computationally intensive process of mining bitcoins.

Illicit mining operations are estimated to have pilfered electricity from legitimate power plants in Malaysia to the tune of $723 million between 2018 and 2023, Cointelegraph reports. In response, the Malaysian government has taken drastic measures, including the confiscation and subsequent destruction of Bitcoin mining equipment valued at over $1.2 million, which was used for illicit operations.

Despite Thailand being generally more lenient toward bitcoin activities than other regional countries, this incident highlights the challenges in regulating such a dynamic and technologically complex industry, even as the Thai government has introduced several measures to protect investors and ensure financial stability.

Financial authorities in Thailand have recently adopted a more crypto-friendly regulatory stance, with the Thai Securities and Exchange Commission easing restrictions to allow retail investors to access digital tokens backed by real estate or infrastructure projects, which became available in January.
