Mobile Technology Is Playing a Key Role in Driving Web3 Adoption
Aug 07, 2024 at 04:03 am
Several Web3 companies are now exploring using mobile hardware and operating systems to drive mass adoption of Web3

Mobile technology has played a pivotal role in reshaping society and influencing behavior in ways that were largely unforeseen. From revolutionizing the social media experience to facilitating novel software distribution models, mobile devices have left an indelible mark on the technological landscape.
Now, several Web3 companies are exploring the use of mobile hardware and operating systems to drive mass adoption of Web3. By circumventing the restrictive app store policies prevalent on traditional Big Tech platforms, these companies aim to lower the barrier to entry for users who may be struggling with the technical user interfaces of current Web3 products.
In an interview with Cointelegraph, Max Richter of the Aphone team — a decentralized Web3 operating system that can run on smartphones, tablets, and computers — discussed the role of mobile technology in driving Web3 adoption.
According to Richter, many Web3 developers currently face difficulties in getting their decentralized applications listed on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. Even if their applications are approved, the software developers must contend with these stores taking a sizable portion of the revenue generated by their applications.
Commenting on the high barrier to entry imposed on Web3 builders by traditional app stores, the software developer had this to say:
Richter also highlighted the role that mobile-style operating systems play in abstracting away the technical complexities of Web3. This is achieved through the use of easily recognizable touch icons and integrated wallets, which can help users avoid the hassle of “fumbling around trying to create wallets” or falling prey to advanced phishing scams.

Solana Saga smartphone showcases mobile’s role in pushing Web3 (HEADER)
Solana made headlines in late 2022 with the announcement of the Solana Saga smartphone, a crypto-friendly mobile device built on the Android operating system and featuring built-in decentralized applications, native Web3 support and a Solana wallet.
Having quickly sold out by November 2023, the smartphone was spotted on sites like eBay for upwards of $5,000, highlighting the relative demand and interest in the mobile device.
SUI to launch handheld gaming console
In April, the SUI network announced plans to launch a crypto-friendly handheld gaming device, dubbed “SuiPlay0x1.” The device is reminiscent of handheld gaming computers such as the Steam Deck. SUI’s foray into handheld gaming is an attempt to onboard users to the crypto space through games, much like the approach currently employed by the Telegram Open Network.
Around the same time that the handheld gaming console was unveiled, BytePlus, a division of TikTok's parent company ByteDance, announced a partnership with Mysten Labs, the company behind the SUI blockchain, to explore onchain solutions for gaming.
