Mastercard and Standard Chartered Break Barriers with Successful Tokenization Test
May 16, 2024 at 03:58 am
Mastercard and Standard Chartered Bank Hong Kong (SCBHK) have jointly completed a successful live test of Mastercard's Multi-Token Network (MTN) within the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) Fintech Supervisory Sandbox. The pilot involved tokenizing carbon credits and performing an atomic swap between two different tokens, demonstrating the potential of MTN for facilitating secure and efficient cross-chain asset transfers and settlement.

Mastercard and Standard Chartered Advance Tokenization with Successful Multi-Token Network Test
Mastercard and Standard Chartered Bank Hong Kong (SCBHK) have made a significant stride in the digital asset landscape with the completion of the first live test of Mastercard's Multi-Token Network (MTN) within the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) Fintech Supervisory Sandbox. This groundbreaking pilot marks a pivotal moment in the tokenization of carbon credits and underscores the growing momentum towards digital asset adoption in Hong Kong.
The proof-of-concept pilot involved a client of SCBHK's virtual bank, Mox Bank, depositing funds into their account with the intent to purchase a carbon credit. Mox subsequently requested SCBHK to tokenize the carbon credit through Libeara, a tokenization service provider launched by Standard Chartered's venture arm, SC Ventures.
Mastercard's MTN seamlessly tokenized the deposit, setting the stage for an atomic swap – a real-time transaction that seamlessly exchanges assets across different blockchains – involving the two tokens. This successful demonstration showcases the potential for interoperability between different blockchain networks.
"As the HKMA actively cultivates Hong Kong's position as a leading digital assets hub, Mastercard remains steadfast in its commitment to support these endeavors," said Helena Chen, Mastercard's Managing Director for Hong Kong and Macau. "We recognize the importance of fostering fintech innovation and propelling the growth of the tokenization landscape in Hong Kong."
The HKMA's proactive role in this domain is evident in its efforts to encourage Hong Kong banks, including SCBHK, to enhance their services for cryptocurrency exchanges. SCBHK's active participation in the HKMA's Project Ensemble, e-HKD pilot program, and multinational Project mBridge further underscores its commitment to advancing digital asset innovation.
Beyond the successful MTN test, Standard Chartered has also played a pivotal role in other significant fintech initiatives. Its involvement in initiatives with SWIFT using CBDC and U.K. Finance using the Regulated Liability Network underscores its broad-based commitment to digital asset adoption. Additionally, SC Ventures' establishment of a crypto fund in the United Arab Emirates in November 2023 further solidifies Standard Chartered's global reach and commitment to digital asset exploration.
Notably, HSBC and China's Ant Group also conducted tokenized deposit transaction tests within the HKMA sandbox in November 2023, leveraging Ant Group's blockchain. HSBC's expansion into Bitcoin and Ethereum futures exchange-traded fund trading in Hong Kong further underscores the bank's embrace of digital assets.
These developments underscore the rapidly evolving landscape of digital assets in Hong Kong. The collaboration between industry leaders such as Mastercard, Standard Chartered, and the HKMA is driving the tokenization market forward, opening up new possibilities for digital asset transactions and paving the way for broader adoption in the future.
