Google Counters Microsoft's 'Stargate' with Massive AI Investment
Apr 17, 2024 at 01:01 am
Google and Microsoft are engaged in a heated competition to develop artificial general intelligence (AGI). Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis has indicated that Google plans to invest over $100 billion in AGI development, in response to Microsoft and OpenAI's reported "Stargate" project, a $100 billion supercomputer to train AI systems. Hassabis' comments suggest Google's awareness of Microsoft's efforts and its intention to match or exceed them.

Google Pours Billions into AI Competition with Microsoft's 'Stargate' Project
In the burgeoning field of artificial intelligence (AI), Google is not shying away from the challenge posed by Microsoft's ambitious "Stargate" project. According to Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, the tech giant expects to invest over $100 billion in the development of artificial general intelligence (AGI).
Hassabis' remarks, made at a recent TED conference in Canada, were reportedly prompted by a question about Microsoft's announcement of Stargate, a $100 billion plan to build a supercomputer specifically designed for training AI systems. Sources close to the project, speaking on condition of anonymity, have revealed that it is codenamed "Stargate" and involves a multi-phase deployment of computing systems across the United States.
Stargate is not intended as a single monolithic system like the current world's most powerful supercomputer, Frontier, which was built at a cost of approximately $600 million. Instead, it will comprise numerous computers distributed across the country, culminating in the final "Stargate" system.
Hassabis' comments, while not explicitly outlining Google's response to Stargate, suggest that the company is fully aware of Microsoft's ambitions and intends to match or surpass them. The stakes are high, as both companies strive to be the first to achieve AGI.
AGI refers to an AI system that possesses the ability to perform any intellectual task that an average adult human can, given access to the necessary resources. Such a system would be capable of functions such as starting and running a business, given access to a line of credit or a cryptocurrency wallet.
However, defining and creating AGI presents a significant challenge, as there is no scientific consensus on its precise nature. Even among leading AI scientists like Yann LeCun of Meta and Demis Hassabis of Google, there is considerable debate about whether AGI can be achieved through the current approach of expanding datasets and training parameters.
In an article published in the Financial Times, Hassabis drew parallels between the current AI/AGI hype cycle and the scams that plagued the cryptocurrency market. Despite the skepticism, both AI and crypto have experienced significant financial growth in the first four months of 2024.
Bitcoin, the world's dominant cryptocurrency, has surged from $30,395 per coin in April 2023 to over $60,000 at the time of writing, recently retreating from an all-time high of around $73,000. Microsoft, the current leader in AI, has seen its stock price rise from $286 per share to approximately $416 during the same period.
As the competition for AI supremacy intensifies, Google's commitment to matching or surpassing Microsoft's investment reflects the stakes involved in shaping the future of AI technology.
