Generative AI: A Double-Edged Sword for Businesses as They Embrace Progress and Confront Challenges
Apr 18, 2024 at 07:03 pm
Despite enthusiasm for generative AI's potential, a recent survey conducted by Coleman Parkes Research Ltd. and sponsored by SAS reveals significant obstacles faced by US organizations in implementing the technology. Key concerns include a lack of governance frameworks (93% of businesses), data privacy and security issues (80% of leaders), talent shortages, and difficulty integrating GenAI with existing systems. These findings highlight the need for organizations to develop comprehensive strategies and invest in technologies that ensure integration, governance, and explainability of language models to fully realize the value of generative AI.

Generative AI: A Double-Edged Sword for Businesses Embracing Progress and Facing Challenges
Las Vegas, April 18, 2024 - While businesses eagerly embrace the transformative potential of generative AI (GenAI) to revolutionize their operations and enhance productivity, a recent study reveals a concerning lack of governance frameworks and strategic preparation, posing obstacles to realizing the full benefits of this cutting-edge technology.
The study, conducted by Coleman Parkes Research Ltd. in partnership with SAS, surveyed 300 US decision-makers responsible for GenAI strategy or data analytics. The findings paint a picture of organizations navigating a complex landscape of opportunities and challenges as they seek to harness the power of GenAI.
The Enthusiasm and the Gaps
Organizations are enthusiastic about the potential of GenAI to drive efficiency and innovation. However, beneath the surface of this optimism lies a concerning realization of understanding gaps, a lack of strategic planning, and a talent shortage that hinder the effective implementation and measurement of the technology's true value.
"Organizations are recognizing that large language models alone do not solve business challenges," said Marinela Profi, Strategic AI Advisor at SAS. "GenAI should be viewed as a complementary tool to enhance existing processes and systems, rather than a magic bullet that will fulfill all their business aspirations. It is essential for organizations to invest time and resources in developing a sound strategy and implementing technology that provides integration, governance, and explainability of GenAI models before committing fully and getting locked into suboptimal solutions."
Stumbling Blocks to Implementation
Businesses face significant challenges in four key areas of GenAI implementation:
- Trust in Data Usage and Regulatory Compliance: Only 10% of organizations have a robust system in place to evaluate bias and privacy risks associated with GenAI models. Moreover, a staggering 93% of US businesses lack a comprehensive governance framework for GenAI, exposing them to potential noncompliance risks.
- Integration with Existing Systems: Organizations report encountering compatibility issues while attempting to integrate GenAI with their current systems, hindering seamless implementation and the realization of potential synergies.
- Talent and Skills: There is a scarcity of in-house GenAI expertise. As HR departments struggle to fill positions with qualified candidates, organizational leaders express concern about their ability to derive maximum value from their GenAI investments due to a lack of necessary skills.
- Cost Predictions: Decision-makers highlight the prohibitive direct and indirect costs associated with utilizing GenAI models. While model creators initially provide token cost estimates, organizations are realizing the true extent of expenses involved in knowledge preparation, training, and ongoing model management, which are often protracted and complex.
"The key to unlocking the full potential of GenAI lies in identifying real-world use cases that deliver tangible value and address human needs in a sustainable and scalable manner," Profi emphasized. "Through this study, we reaffirm our commitment to empowering organizations to stay relevant, invest wisely, and maintain resilience. In an era characterized by rapid AI advancements, competitive advantage hinges on the ability to embrace the resilience rules."
The Path Forward
To overcome these challenges and fully leverage the benefits of GenAI, businesses must prioritize the following steps:
- Develop a Clear GenAI Strategy: Establish a well-defined strategy that aligns GenAI initiatives with broader business objectives, addressing issues of data governance, resource allocation, and risk management.
- Invest in Governance and Compliance: Implement robust governance frameworks to ensure ethical and responsible use of GenAI, mitigate bias and privacy risks, and maintain compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Foster a Culture of Innovation: Cultivate an organizational culture that encourages innovation, experimentation, and continuous learning to stay abreast of the latest GenAI advancements and best practices.
- Upskill the Workforce: Invest in training and development programs to equip employees with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively utilize GenAI and derive maximum value from its capabilities.
SAS Innovate and Beyond
The GenAI market research findings were unveiled at SAS Innovate, a leading industry event that brings together business leaders, technical experts, and SAS partners to explore the latest data and AI trends and innovations. SAS remains committed to supporting organizations as they navigate the evolving GenAI landscape, providing cutting-edge solutions, expertise, and thought leadership to help them unlock the full potential of this transformative technology.
