FBI Subpoenas Attendees of Bitcoin Core Developer Event Amid Theft Probe
Apr 13, 2024 at 12:36 pm
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) issued a subpoena to obtain personal information from attendees of a Bitcoin Core developer event in October 2022. The subpoena is related to allegations made by Dashjr regarding a bitcoin theft. Event attendees were included in the investigation due to Dashjr's claim that the theft occurred as a result of a PGP key compromise.

FBI Subpoenas Attendees of 2022 Bitcoin Core Developer Event Amid Theft Investigation
Washington, D.C. - The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has reportedly issued a subpoena demanding the release of personal information pertaining to attendees of a 2022 Bitcoin core developer event.
The subpoena stems from an investigation into allegations made by Luke Dashjr, a prominent BTC developer and co-founder of the Ocean mining pool, who claims to have lost over 200 BTC in a hacking incident.
Event Attendees Implicated
Mike Schmidt, co-founder of the Bitcoin non-profit Brink, disclosed in a statement that he had received the FBI subpoena as part of the ongoing investigation. The subpoena specifically requests information about individuals who attended the CoreDev Atlanta event, held in October 2022, just prior to TABConf 2022.
Schmidt confirmed that he had complied with the subpoena's demands, which included providing the first and last names, GitHub usernames, and email addresses of attendees. He stated that he had consulted legal counsel before making this decision.
Breach of Confidentiality
The subpoena had been issued with a confidentiality provision that lapsed a year later, leading to the revelation of the information. Schmidt criticized Dashjr for failing to secure his Bitcoin holdings adequately, thereby unintentionally exposing conference attendees to FBI scrutiny.
"The individual advocating for secure Bitcoin usage failed to protect his own assets, resulting in the exposure of attendees to the FBI," Schmidt said.
PGP Key Compromise
Dashjr reported that his funds were stolen on December 31, 2022, following the compromise of his Pretty Good Privacy (PGP) key. PGP is an encryption program designed for secure data communication and is commonly used in email, digital signatures, and file encryption.
At the time of the theft, the stolen BTC was valued at approximately $3.3 million. However, with the subsequent market recovery and the upcoming Bitcoin halving event, the value of the stolen cryptocurrency has now surpassed $14 million.
FBI Investigation Ongoing
The FBI's investigation into the theft remains ongoing, with no suspects yet identified. The subpoena issued to event attendees is part of the agency's effort to gather information that could assist in the apprehension of the perpetrator.
The FBI declined to comment on the investigation, citing the ongoing nature of the case. However, the agency emphasized its commitment to investigating cybercrimes and protecting the public from financial losses.
Implications for Bitcoin Community
The subpoena issued by the FBI has raised concerns within the Bitcoin community regarding privacy and the potential for overreach in the investigation of cryptocurrency crimes. Some observers have expressed fears that the FBI's actions could have a chilling effect on the development and adoption of Bitcoin and other decentralized technologies.
However, the FBI has assured that its investigation is focused on the specific theft allegations made by Dashjr and is not intended to target the broader Bitcoin community. The agency has also stated that it is committed to respecting the privacy rights of individuals and will only request information that is relevant to the investigation.
Call for Vigilance
In light of the theft and subsequent FBI investigation, experts are urging Bitcoin users to exercise caution and adopt robust security measures to protect their digital assets. This includes using strong passwords, enabling two-factor authentication, and storing Bitcoin in secure wallets.
The Bitcoin community is encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement authorities promptly. By working together, the community can contribute to the safety and security of the Bitcoin ecosystem.
