EigenLayer Unveils "Universal" EIGEN Token Amidst Scrutiny and Controversy

Apr 30, 2024 at 07:07 pm

EigenLayer, an Ethereum-based restaking protocol, has released the whitepaper for its upcoming token, EIGEN. The token's primary purpose is to secure the ecosystem's Actively Validated Services (AVSs). The team plans to airdrop and allocate the initial 1.67 billion EIGEN supply through two seasons, with 5% allocated for restakers in Season 1 and 10% for future stakedrops. The token claim window will open on May 10 for 120 days, but users from 50 "prohibited jurisdictions" including the US, Canada, and China are ineligible.

EigenLayer Unveils EIGEN, the "Universal Intersubjective Work Token," Amidst Scrutiny and Controversy

EigenLayer, the Ethereum-based restaking protocol, has released the highly anticipated whitepaper for its upcoming token, EIGEN, igniting a flurry of discussions and criticisms within the cryptocurrency community. The whitepaper outlines the token's utility, distribution strategy, and governance mechanisms.

EIGEN: Upholding Security in the EigenLayer Ecosystem

EIGEN, described as the ecosystem's "Universal Intersubjective Work Token," serves a pivotal role in safeguarding the security of Actively Validated Services (AVSs) within the EigenLayer ecosystem. These AVSs encompass a broad spectrum of applications, including transaction ordering, databases, prediction markets, storage services, oracles, and artificial intelligence.

At its core, EIGEN aims to address the "intersubjective" faults that plague blockchain networks. These faults refer to behaviors that lack objective identification on-chain, posing a significant threat to network integrity. EigenLayer's innovative mechanisms, including "intersubjective" forking and staking, are designed to mitigate these vulnerabilities.

Token Distribution: Stakedrops, Community Activities, and Ecosystem Development

EigenLayer has meticulously planned the distribution of EIGEN tokens, with a total initial supply of 1.67 billion. The distribution strategy involves two seasons, comprising stakedrops, community activities, and ecosystem development initiatives. During Season 1, a mere 5% of the initial supply will be allocated to restakers, divided between Phase 1 (4.54%) and Phase 2 (0.46%). A substantial 10% is earmarked for stakedrops in subsequent seasons.

Eligibility for token claims extends to users who have staked directly through EigenLayer or via liquid restaking tokens (LRTs). Staking snapshots taken prior to March 15, 2023, serve as the primary criterion for participation.

Token Claim Window and Non-Transferability Stir Concerns

The announcement of EIGEN's token distribution has been met with mixed reactions, particularly regarding the restrictive claim process and the non-transferrable nature of the tokens during Season 1. Eigen Foundation has designated over 50 countries, including the United States, Canada, China, and Russia, as "prohibited jurisdictions," effectively barring users from these nations from claiming EIGEN tokens. The protocol also prohibits the use of VPNs to circumvent these restrictions.

Furthermore, the token unlock schedule raises eyebrows, with the first year offering zero token unlocks. Subsequent years will witness the release of 4% of the total tokens each month. Notably, the team intends to transform EIGEN into an inflationary asset in the future.

TVL Performance and Community Feedback

Despite the controversies surrounding EIGEN, EigenLayer's total value locked (TVL) reached its zenith of $16.3 billion on Monday. At the time of writing, it stands at $15.79 billion, placing EigenLayer as the second largest TVL holder in the DeFi ecosystem, trailing only Lido.

The community has expressed a range of opinions on the EIGEN token distribution and its implications for the EigenLayer ecosystem. Some have raised concerns about the restrictive token claim process and the potential dilution of token value due to the inflationary nature of EIGEN. Others remain optimistic about the project's long-term prospects, citing the team's commitment to innovation and the growing demand for restaking services.

As EigenLayer prepares for the token claim window, which opens on May 10, 2023, and remains open for 120 days until September 2024, the debate surrounding EIGEN's distribution and future implications is expected to continue.
