DMM Bitcoin Prepares to Raise $321M After Hack Steals 4,503 BTC
Jun 05, 2024 at 02:21 pm
DMM Bitcoin, a Japanese cryptocurrency exchange, is preparing to raise 50 billion yen ($321 million) after a major hack that stole 4,503 Bitcoin

Japanese cryptocurrency exchange DMM Bitcoin is reportedly preparing to raise 50 billion yen ($321 million) in the wake of a major hack that saw 4,503 Bitcoin pilfered from the platform.
The hack, which is now the seventh largest crypto hack according to Chainalysis, prompted a detailed investigation and regulatory action.
Here are the details of the hack, the response, and the upcoming fundraising effort:
The Hack Details
On May 31, DMM Bitcoin announced that digital assets worth $320 million, or 4,503 BTC, were stolen from the exchange in an unauthorized outflow.
The stolen Bitcoins were quickly moved through several wallets, with some of the funds being mixed using Tornado Cash, a mixing service known for its ability to enhance transaction anonymity.
By cutting the link between input and output addresses, Tornado Cash makes it harder for authorities to follow the stolen funds.
The Response and Fundraising
Following the hack, DMM Bitcoin provided an update on its measures to fully compensate affected users by raising 50 billion yen to acquire Bitcoin.
However, the exchange emphasized that these purchases will be made gradually and in a way that minimizes disruption to the Bitcoin market.
The exchange, in collaboration with cybersecurity experts and relevant regulatory authorities, is pinpointing the error to gain a deeper understanding of the attack and take necessary steps to prevent future occurrences.
The Financial Services Agency of Japan has ordered the company to submit a report detailing the hacking incident and measures for compensation.
Moreover, Japan's Finance Minister, Shunichi Suzuki, expressed his commitment to bolstering the security of the country's exchanges to prevent similar incidents in the future.
In the next phase of actions following the hack, DMM Bitcoin will continue to work with the police and computer crime specialists to recover the stolen funds and identify the perpetrators.
Given the severity of the security breach, it remains to be seen how the exchange will prioritize user protection in this context.
