Crypto Market Bounces Amid Halving Volatility

Apr 19, 2024 at 05:07 am

The cryptocurrency market has experienced a slight recovery, with Bitcoin (BTC) bouncing back from a low of $59,650 to $64,200. However, prices remain well below March highs due to pre-halving volatility and ongoing weakness. The S&P and Nasdaq finished Thursday down 0.22% and 0.52%, respectively, while the Dow finished flat due to concerns about inflation and interest rates. Altcoins traded mixed, with Livepeer (LPT) gaining 12.7% and meme coin cat in a dogs world (MEW) declining by 11.7%.

Cryptocurrency Market Experiences Slight Recovery Amid Pre-Halving Volatility

London, April 20, 2024 - The global cryptocurrency market has witnessed a modest revival in trading activity on Thursday, although prices remain considerably below the historic highs established in March. The market has been marked by pre-halving volatility and persistent weakness.

With less than 30 hours until Bitcoin (BTC), the world's leading cryptocurrency, undergoes its quadrennial halving event, crypto enthusiasts eagerly await its completion. Halvings involve a 50% reduction in the issuance rate of new BTC, potentially triggering market fluctuations.

At the time of writing, Bitcoin has rebounded slightly from the intraday low of $59,650 recorded on Wednesday, briefly touching $64,200 before retreating to find support around $63,300.

The broader financial landscape has also experienced volatility. Stock markets initially opened lower but recovered during midday trading before slipping back into negative territory near the close. Uncertainty surrounding inflation and interest rate expectations has fueled market volatility. Atlanta Fed President Raphael Bostic reiterated on Thursday that he does not anticipate reducing interest rates until the end of the year.

The S&P 500 Index closed down 0.22%, while the Nasdaq Composite Index fell 0.52%, continuing its negative streak, which analysts predict could extend to a fourth consecutive weekly decline. The Dow Jones Industrial Average remained flat.

The U.S. Dollar Index (DXY), a measure of the dollar's strength against a basket of foreign currencies, rose 0.4% to 106.152. The U.S. 10-Year Treasury note yield increased by 7.6 basis points to 4.638%.

Bitcoin's Post-Halving Outlook

Analysts at Secure Digital Markets have observed that Bitcoin has shown resilience following its brief dip below the crucial $60,000 level. However, they note that Bitcoin remains below its 50-day moving average, indicating resistance around $67,000.

"Market conditions currently favor spot premiums over futures contracts," the analysts stated, "reminiscent of previous trends when Bitcoin traded around $40,000." This suggests reduced speculative activity and a more favorable environment.

They further highlighted a decline in outflows from Bitcoin spot exchange-traded funds (ETFs) over the past few weeks, with net flows remaining negative since Friday. Grayscale, the largest Bitcoin ETF provider, accounted for a significant portion of recent outflows.

Despite the short-term sideways price action anticipated during and after the halving, most analysts maintain an optimistic view of Bitcoin's long-term prospects. Drawing parallels to previous halving cycles, market analyst Rekt Capital suggests that Bitcoin's next peak may occur between mid-September and mid-October 2025.

Altcoin Performance

Among the top 200 altcoins, trading sentiment was mixed on Thursday, with a slight majority experiencing gains. Livepeer (LPT) recorded the most substantial increase, rising 12.7% to $13.27. Jito (JTO) and Centrifuge (CFG) also exhibited notable gains.

Meme coin cat in a dogs world (MEW) led the decliners, shedding 11.7% in value. Core (CORE) and Sui (SUI) also experienced noticeable price decreases of 9% and 7.3%, respectively.

The total cryptocurrency market capitalization stands at approximately $2.3 trillion, with Bitcoin maintaining a dominance rate of 54.2%.
