The Crypto Industry Is Spending Millions to Influence the 2024 Election

Aug 25, 2024 at 06:05 pm

The link between the crypto industry and elections strengthens with each electoral cycle. Whether through massive donations or influence on economic policies, cryptocurrencies are establishing themselves as a key player in the political game.

The Crypto Industry Is Spending Millions to Influence the 2024 Election

The 2024 presidential election is shaping up to be the crypto industry’s favorite electoral cycle yet, with a total of $119 million donated by the industry, dwarfing donations from any other sector.

This outpouring of donations is largely directed towards candidates who have expressed support for cryptocurrencies, in a bid to steer clear of stringent regulations.

Industry heavyweights Coinbase and Ripple have doubled down on this strategy, channeling the bulk of their contributions into pro-crypto super PACs.

For perspective, here's a quick breakdown of the numbers:

The goal of these donations is clear: to shift the balance of power towards candidates who promise a favorable legislative landscape for cryptocurrencies.

But this rise to influence also raises questions, especially about the risks of such influence on democracy. As Rick Claypool, research director at Public Citizen, puts it:

“The sole purpose of these massive sums is to make the crypto industry impossible to ignore.”

This influx of money is poised to reshape the rules of the political game for years to come.

After the “Citizens United” ruling opened the floodgates for political donations, no industry has fully utilized this newfound leeway like the crypto industry.

This strategy, both bold and risky, aims to install a pro-crypto candidate in the White House, a stark contrast to the Biden administration that has been largely antagonistic towards the technology. And yet, bitcoin could become an international reserve currency.

However, the ripple effects of this strategy could extend further than anticipated. Other large corporations may follow suit, injecting massive funds into future elections and disrupting the balance of power.

“Overturning Citizens United has never been more urgent,” Claypool adds.

One thing's for sure: crypto has made a grand entrance into the political scene, and its influence is only growing.

Whether this financial offensive will truly steer American economic policies or face resistance remains to be seen. The results of the 2024 election will serve as a key barometer for the real impact of cryptocurrencies on American politics.

Back in early August, some analysts were already claiming that crypto was secretly influencing American elections. With $119 million poured into the presidential election, this prediction seems more relevant than ever.
