Compound, a decentralized finance protocol, has surpassed MakerDAO to become the largest decentralized finance protocol by total value locked, with approximately $500 million in cryptocurrency locked on its platform. Compound's rise follows the distribution of its native governance token, COMP, which has seen a surge in value since its launch on June 15.

Compound Surpasses MakerDAO as Largest Decentralized Finance Protocol
June 20th, 2020 - In a significant shift within the decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystem, Compound has overtaken MakerDAO as the largest DeFi protocol by total value locked (TVL), according to data from DeFi Pulse.
As of June 20th, Compound holds approximately $500 million in cryptocurrency locked on its platform, while MakerDAO's TVL stands at $486 million. This marks a notable milestone for Compound, which has emerged as a leader in the DeFi space.
The surge in Compound's TVL can be attributed in part to the recent distribution of its native governance token, COMP. Launched on June 15th, COMP was distributed to token borrowers and suppliers on the Compound platform. Following its distribution, the COMP token began trading on decentralized exchange Uniswap at a price of approximately $30. Since then, the token has experienced a surge in value, reaching a price of $249 as of June 20th, according to data from CoinGecko.
The COMP token was first unveiled in February and went live on the Ethereum blockchain in mid-April. Its purpose is to give token holders a voice in the governance of the Compound protocol. Token holders can vote on proposals related to protocol parameters, such as interest rates and risk management.
Compound's rise to prominence highlights the growing adoption and maturity of DeFi protocols. These protocols enable users to access a wide range of financial services in a decentralized and autonomous manner, without the need for intermediaries. The surge in Compound's TVL and the success of the COMP token distribution demonstrate the potential for DeFi to disrupt traditional financial markets.
It remains to be seen how the DeFi landscape will continue to evolve, but Compound's ascent to the top spot suggests that it will play a major role in shaping the future of this burgeoning sector.
