Coinbase, a major cryptocurrency exchange, has given Russian users until May 31 to withdraw their funds or provide proof that they are not subject to EU economic sanctions, after which their accounts will be blocked.

Coinbase Suspends Accounts of Russian Users Amidst Sanctions Pressure
Jakarta, Indonesia - The colossal cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase has issued a directive to its Russian users to withdraw their funds by May 31, signaling the platform's compliance with sanctions imposed on the country.
According to a report by Russian business news outlet RBC, numerous Coinbase users in Russia have received notifications informing them of the impending suspension of their accounts on May 31. To avoid this measure, users are obligated to furnish evidence that they are not subject to economic sanctions imposed by the European Union.
"By May 31, 2022, you must either withdraw all funds from your account or provide us with a special document confirming that you are not subject to this sanction," the notice stipulated.
Users who fail to withdraw their funds by the designated deadline will face account freezes and potential account closures. Coinbase's Chief Legal Officer, Paul Grewal, clarified in a Twitter statement that the company can no longer offer services to certain Russian clients registered on the platform or residing within the European Union.
As reported by Bitcoin.com News, Grewal reassured users that Coinbase is collaborating with affected customers to assist them in proving that the sanctions do not apply to them. The company is also facilitating the withdrawal of funds from Coinbase. Notably, the exchange will continue to provide services to Russian users who are not sanctioned and are not located in the EU.
This decision stems from the comprehensive sanctions imposed by the United States and the European Union on the Russian economy. Coinbase's move follows a similar restriction implemented by cryptocurrency trading giant Binance, which curtailed its services to Russian citizens.
The escalating sanctions targeting Russia have had far-reaching implications for the cryptocurrency industry, as exchanges grapple with the complexities of compliance and the need to balance geopolitical considerations with their obligations to users. The impact of these measures on the Russian cryptocurrency market remains a subject of ongoing analysis and uncertainty.
