BNB Chain Suffers Another Hack, This Time Losing $80K in Bitcoin (BTC)

May 29, 2024 at 04:00 pm

BNB Chain became the latest victim of a hacker attack where more than $80,000 worth of Bitcoin (BTC) has been stolen.

BNB Chain Suffers Another Hack, This Time Losing $80K in Bitcoin (BTC)

BNB Chain suffered a recent hack, leading to the theft of Bitcoin (BTC) valued at over $80,000. The incident, detected by blockchain security firm Cyvers, involved suspicious operations with BTC.

Cyvers notified X of the breach, speculating that the attacker might be a White-hat hacker aiming to probe the network. The funds used for the attack were reportedly sourced from Tornado Cash, a crypto mixer sanctioned for its ability to anonymize transactions.

Moreover, the hacker's interaction with the Binance exchange suggests a level of expertise, hinting at a possible ethical motive behind the hack.

Despite the BNB Chain governance token being valued at $315, the breach of the trading platform could serve as a wake-up call, especially considering that losing $80,000 is a relatively small sum in the context of cryptocurrency thefts.

More crypto platforms hit by theft

The timing of this exploit is noteworthy, as it occurred just a week after Gala Games, a major gaming and blockchain company, was hacked. Gala Games' attack resulted in user assets being lost, amounting to approximately 23 million, making it one of the largest crypto exploits reported this month.

Eric Schiermeyer, CEO of Gala Games, acknowledged the breach, attributing it to insufficient internal controls. Mr. Schiermeyer aimed to reassure stakeholders that measures are being taken to enhance security to prevent such unfortunate incidents in the future.

The company has since managed to rectify the issue and recover some of the stolen cryptocurrencies with the assistance of Binance and law enforcement.

This incident has kept the crypto space on edge, heightening concerns over other instances where such vulnerabilities could be exploited again.

As the investigation into the BNB Chain exploit continues, the focus lies on improving security standards and utilizing these breaches as an opportunity to strengthen blockchain networks.

While this move may be seen as ethical hacking, one must question the intent behind such actions and whether they could escalate into more threatening endeavors in the future, especially in the domain of cryptocurrencies, which are constantly evolving and susceptible to various threats.
