LONG BEACH — The Millikan baseball team knew what it was going to take to earn a share of the Moore League title.
The Rams executed early and scored three runs in the top of the first inning Wednesday en route to a 7-2 victory over Wilson in the league finale at Blair Field.
The Rams will share the league championship with the Bruins, who clinched their share of the title last week.
With early run support, Millikan junior Daunte Bell confidently pitched a complete game. He went seven innings and allowed six hits, two runs and no walks. The left-hander struck out eight batters.
“I feel like we were able to set the tone early and that right there got us the win itself,” Bell said.
The Rams added added to their lead with four runs over the final three innings. They led 7-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh.
“Just knowing the type of pitcher I am,” Bell added, “and how much command I feel I can have, when I get up those three runs, I feel like that’s all I really needed. And when we added more, that was just the cherry on top.”
Millikan improved to 21-7 overall and 11-1 in the Moore League.
The Rams have won 23 of 24 league games over the past two seasons. The loss was to Wilson 10-2 on April 4.
“You come to the Moore League to play in big games like this,” Millikan coach Ron Keester said.
The Bruins (19-9, 11-1) came into the game undefeated in the Moore League and could have won an outright league title.
“It’s a tough pill for us to swallow today,” Wilson coach Andy Hall said.
After the game, the Bruins won a virtual coin flip and will enter the CIF Southern Section playoffs as the league’s No. 1 seed. Millikan will be the league’s No. 2 seed.
Both teams earned automatic playoff berths. The CIF-SS baseball playoff brackets will be released Monday.
“When you get to the playoffs it’s about being hot, playing well at the right time of the year,” Hall said. “We had a rough week this week and we could really use a good week of practice next week to get ourselves ready to go.”
Millikan junior designated hitter Shane Wally hit a leadoff double in the first inning. Senior shortstop Andrew Perez laid down a sacrifice bunt that moved Wally to third with one out. Rams senior center fielder Anthony Pack (Texas signee) delivered a one-out RBI single that scored Wally for a 1-0 lead.
“It’s our job to get him (Bell) runs so he’s comfortable, and he showed why he’s one of the best lefties in California,” said Pack, who went 3 for 4 at the plate with three RBIs and two doubles.
Millikan senior third baseman Ben Keisler hit a double to put runners on second and third with one out. Junior first baseman Adrian Ramirez drove in two runs with a single, making it 3-0.
Senior right fielder Matthews Ness hit a two-out single and senior catcher Connor Patton drew a walk to load the bases. However, Millikan’s No. 9 hitter Xavier Kennard chopped a ground ball to third base to end the top of the first.
Wilson starting pitcher Ben Howard settled in and retired the side in order in the third and fourth innings.
Bruins junior James Mirabile and senior catcher Logan Smith singled with two outs in the bottom of the fourth. However, Bell struck out junior right fielder Russell Centanni to end the fourth.
Pack’s RBI double, which scored Perez, put Millikan up 4-0 in the fifth inning.
Millikan senior second baseman Noa Morales scored on a throwing error to make it 5-0 in the sixth inning.
Pack’s RBI double, which scored Perez, put the Rams up 6-0 in the seventh inning.
Keisler’s RBI sacrifice fly gave Wilson a 7-0 advantage.
Howard, who went 6 1/3 innings and allowed eight hits, seven runs and two walks, was relieved by sophomore Cooper George.
Mirabile, who went 3 for 3 at the plate, all infield singles, beat out and throw to first. Smith, who went 2 for 3 at the plate, hit a double to put runners on second and third with no outs in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Mirabile scored on a passed ball to make it 7-1. Centanni’s drove in a run to make it 7-2.
Bell struck out senior second baseman Diego Valdez for the final out.
