Anonymous Trader Loses Millions in Crypto Controversy

An unidentified trader allegedly lost over a million dollars worth of cryptocurrency due to a hard fork of the 0L Network, which was allegedly conducted by the team without community approval.

Pseudonymous Trader Loses Millions in Cryptocurrency Due to Controversial Hard Fork

May 8, 2023

An anonymous trader known only as "NN" claims to have lost over a million dollars worth of cryptocurrency in a contentious hard fork initiated by the 0L Network. According to a post by NN on an online forum, the hard fork was unsanctioned by the community and resulted in the deletion of 4% of the network's total supply, including a significant number of funds held by unsuspecting investors.

Unresolved Bug Exploited by Insiders

NN alleges that the team behind 0L Network had been aware of a bug in their smart contract for over two years, which allowed insiders to unlock vested tokens prematurely by distributing them across multiple wallets. This loophole was allegedly exploited by certain individuals within the network, while the team chose to disregard the issue due to the then-low value of the Libra token.

Hard Fork Targets Innocent Investors

When the Libra token's value rose significantly, the team decided to address the bug by instigating a hard fork, expunging the funds from wallets associated with the exploited loophole. However, according to NN, the hard fork was poorly implemented and resulted in the inadvertent loss of funds from innocent investors.

"The team was fully aware that innocent wallets would be affected," NN wrote in their post. "Tracing back all the tokens was impossible, so they opted to blacklist wallets based on an algorithm designed by one of their own, who had ironically also exploited the loophole in the past."

Trader's Wallet Targeted Despite Precautionary Measures

Despite purchasing tokens from six different validators to minimize risk, NN's wallet was caught in the crossfire due to a single validator that the team had deemed rogue. NN alleges that other victims were also mistreated and expelled from the network's Discord group.

Possible Connection to Previous SEC Charges

While the identity of 0L Network's pseudonymous lead developer, known as "0D," remains unknown, several validators have suggested that they may be the same person as Lucas Geiger, the founder of the OpenLibra project. Geiger has a history with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), having been charged with fraudulent behavior in connection with Wireline, a decentralized peer-to-peer network he co-founded.

Allegations of Fraud and Unregistered Securities Offering

Wireline raised $20 million in venture capital funding in 2018, but no network was ever developed, and investors never received the promised WRL ERC-20 tokens. In 2021, the SEC charged Wireline with fraud and unregistered securities offering, resulting in a $650,000 fine.

The allegations surrounding the 0L Network hard fork and the potential involvement of Lucas Geiger have raised concerns about the integrity of the cryptocurrency ecosystem. The incident highlights the importance of transparency and accountability in decentralized networks and the need for investors to conduct thorough due diligence before entrusting their funds to any project.
