Understanding Leverage in Binance Futures
Leverage allows traders to control a larger position using a smaller amount of capital. On Binance Futures, this is achieved by borrowing funds from the exchange to amplify potential profits—or losses—from price movements. The platform offers leverage ranging from 1x to 125x, depending on the trading pair. For example, with 10x leverage, a $1,000 investment can control a $10,000 position. It’s crucial to understand that while leverage magnifies gains, it also increases risk exposure significantly.
Setting Up Your Binance Futures Account
Before using leverage, ensure your Binance Futures account is properly configured:
- Log into your Binance account and navigate to the Futures section.
- Complete identity verification if not already done.
- Transfer funds from your spot wallet to your futures wallet using the 'Transfer' button.
- Select the asset (e.g., USDT or BUSD) and amount you want to move. This step ensures your trading balance is available for leveraged positions. Without funds in the futures wallet, you cannot open leveraged trades.
Choosing Leverage on the Trading Interface
Once funds are in your futures wallet, select a futures contract like BTCUSDT. On the trading interface: - Locate the leverage display next to the order type (e.g., '10x').
- Click on the leverage value to open a dropdown menu.
- Choose your desired leverage from the available options (e.g., 5x, 20x, 50x).
- Confirm the change by clicking 'Confirm' in the pop-up window. The system will immediately apply the new leverage to all new positions. Note that changing leverage does not affect open positions—it only applies to future trades.
Opening a Leveraged Position
To open a leveraged long or short position: - Select the order type: Limit, Market, or Stop-Limit.
- Enter the quantity of the asset you want to trade.
- Review the estimated margin required, which adjusts based on your selected leverage.
- Click 'Buy/Long' or 'Sell/Short' to execute the trade. For example, if you choose 20x leverage on a $1,000 position, only $50 of your balance is used as margin. The rest is borrowed from Binance. Always check the liquidation price displayed—it shows the price at which your position will be automatically closed to prevent further losses.
Managing Risk with Leverage
High leverage increases the chance of liquidation. To manage this: - Set a stop-loss order to limit downside risk.
- Monitor your maintenance margin ratio, which must stay above the threshold to avoid liquidation.
- Avoid using maximum leverage unless you have a strong risk management strategy.
- Use the 'Auto-Deleveraging' warning indicator on the interface to see how close your position is to forced closure.Binance provides real-time margin level indicators so you can adjust positions before reaching critical levels.
Adjusting Leverage on Open Positions
You can modify leverage even after opening a position: - Go to the 'Positions' tab in the futures interface.
- Find the open position you want to adjust.
- Click the leverage value next to the position.
- Enter a new leverage level in the pop-up window.
- Confirm the change. This action recalculates your margin requirements and liquidation price. Be cautious—increasing leverage on an open position can bring the liquidation price closer to the current market price.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use different leverage for multiple positions simultaneously?Yes. Binance Futures allows you to set different leverage levels for each individual position. Each position operates independently in terms of margin and liquidation risk.
What happens if my position gets liquidated? If the market moves against your position and the liquidation price is reached, Binance will automatically close the trade. You lose the initial margin used for that position. In extreme cases, if the position cannot be closed at the liquidation price, auto-deleveraging may occur, where other traders’ profits are used to cover the loss.
Is there a fee for using leverage on Binance Futures? No direct fee is charged for using leverage itself. However, you pay funding fees every 8 hours if you hold a position past the funding time. These fees vary based on market conditions and are paid to or received from other traders.
How do I know if my leverage is too high?Check the liquidation price and compare it to current market volatility. If the liquidation price is within 5–10% of the current price and the asset is volatile, your leverage may be too aggressive. Also, review your margin ratio—if it’s below 5%, consider reducing position size or increasing margin.
